Spring Highlights. A celebration of North Devon Coast and Countryside events

Spring has sprung on the North Devon Coast. Clovelly kicked off the season loudly with their Shrove Tuesday Lentsherd. There were a few clatters on the cobbles as children set off dragging rattling tin cans Down-a-long in a bid to chase bad spirits away and drive the devil into the sea. Sunday 12 March marked Daffodil Day at Hartland Abbey, their first open day of the season and after a gloomy February and beginning of March the sun shone briefly on those ancient Daffodils and Narcissus. The Camellias, Mimosa and Magnolia were blooming marvellous too. We love the circular walk from the Walled Garden through the woodland down to Blackpool Mill Mouth, I was so engrossed photographing some Primroses that I missed a shot of a Deer leaping across the path right beside me! I wasn't ready for that but I was ready for spotting the first of the wild flowers, Wood Anaemone,  a couple of Dog Violet, a solitary Red Campion, an early Greater Stitchwart and Spring Squill, no Wild Garlic or Bluebells as yet but signs are most promising for the other special open days in April. A meeting of music and poetry comes together for the launch of the "The Postman Poet" a book by Liz Shakespeare based on the life of Edward Capern. Folk musicians and songwriters Nick Wyke & Becki Driscoll have chosen some of his poems to set to music for their CD. As the achievements of the past are celebrated young musicans will be making their own bit of history at the WHAAM Westward Ho! and Appledore Music Showcase. This event will be a great opportunity for young people to showcase their musical talents in front of a live audience. Hopefully April won't bring more showers but it does herald a Wedding Fair and Easter Chicks down Clovelly plus Easter Egg hunts at Hartland Abbey and the Big Sheep. The Big Sheep has a full calendar of events with Toddler Take-over days and ewenique family fun including the pinnacle of the sheep racing calendar, the Grand National. Abbotsham not Aintree but just as thrilling. Odds on favourites Red Ram, Wooly Jumper and Little Pullover will be running. Hartland Abbey will be having open day events for Mothering Sunday, Easter and those famous Bluebells. By then the Swallows will have returned in time to swoop over the old Oak Trees. The Hartland Abbey Estate is also the location for the Hartland Hartbreak Run in aid of the Childrens Hospice Southwest. Scroll down for details if you are you up for the challenge. As I write this hailstones are tapping on the window. Come rain or shine get out and about the coast and countryside this Spring, enjoy what North Devon has to offer. Article Pat Adams 21/3/2017

Sunday 30th April Hartland Hartbreak Run at Hartland Abbey, Huge thanks to the hundreds of runners who puffed, panted and sweated their way round the course through some of North Devon's most stunning scenery on the Hartland Abbey Estate to raise thousands of pounds for the wonderful Children's Hospice South West in 2016. Lets make 2017 even more successful so start training soon for this most deserving cause! Angela Stucley November 2016 Well folks…It's 13 (ish) miles of uphill, downhill, through rivers, bogs and hedges and some really stunning scenery. Mind you, you won't get to see much more than about 2 foot in front of you….. .We are starting and finishing from the fabulous Hartland Abbey and are very fortunate that Sir Hugh and Lady Stucley have allowed us to run around their wonderful estate. You'll encounter the beautiful gardens of the Abbey - with bluebells in full flight - and then the rugged and unrelenting South West Coast Path. After a quick trip around Hartland Lighthouse it's in to the deepest darkest Devonshire countryside - keep your wits about you and you'll probably make it out alive. Back through the abbey grounds once more and up to the ruined Pleasure House overlooking the Atlantic, back onto the coast path and past (through?) a waterfall before once again leaving the coast path to explore some local woods. Once out of the woods there is the opportunity to run through the estate's area of bio-diversity before heading back to the Abbey for the finish. Doesn't sound that bad does it? Did I mention that there might be some hills? Simon Haywood

North Devon's Mind, Body & Soul Festival EWE2 Arena at The BIG Sheep Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th April

North Devon's inaugural Mind, Body & Soul Festival will take place at The BIG Sheep family attraction in Bideford on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April. With all the pressures of modern life it's so easy to feel stressed.... but what exactly is stress? Stress is a modern, widely used buzzword that's used to describe the pressure of modern day, leaving people unable to cope. This new festival will be like no other and promises to leave visitors feeling relaxed, pampered and give them all the tools they will need to lead happier and more fulfilled lives We may live in a world that has more appliances and technology to make for a more comfortable life than previous generations - but does that mean we have better and more fulfilling lifestyles? In today's busy world where more of us have to work in demanding jobs as well as raising a family we have very little time left over for ourselves and when we do find time, we feel guilty about enjoying some 'me' time and this undoubtedly plays havoc with our well-being. The Mind, Body & Soul Festival which is sponsored by 'My Town: Bideford' will give visitors an opportunity to come along to find out ways in which to nourish their mind, body and soul. There is already a wealth of exhibitors and activities planned for the event including yoga, tai chi, allergy testing, beauty treatments, relationship and personal life coaching, healing, pilates, holistic therapies, massage, physics, prayer and much more.

Diana Brook, creator of the hugely popular 'The Mind, Body and Soul Workout Guide' and guest speaker at the festival believes that looking and feeling great on the outside starts with promoting health on the inside and says, "Our thoughts, emotions, nutrition, work, and family life all influence our wellbeing. By increasing awareness of the mind, body, and soul, we can gain a fresh perspective on how to care of our health and begin healing." Diana who is a natural health & healing practitioner based in South Wales will inspire visitors with her talk on Coloured Light Therapy. Diana's aim will be to encourage individuals to become aware of the healing energies of light to promote physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing'

Rick Turner, director of the BIG Sheep and brains behind the Festival, is confident this inaugural festival will prove to be a huge success and lead to the development of an annual festival and said, 'We want our visitors to enjoy the wide range of experiences at our Mind Body & Soul Event and, at the same time, feel confident that they are in good hands. All our exhibitors have been recommended to us so we are confident we have created a safe, honest and ethical environment that allows visitors to come along secure in the knowledge that they will be treated with respect, that they can trust the advice or service they require and that they will enjoy their day. As well as having an opportunity to talk to therapists there will be a series of taster sessions, workshops and talks for visitors to enjoy.' Rick has been surprised by the level of interest that the event has generated to date and adds. 'Taking care of our physical and spiritual needs is an important element in caring for our whole selves and I'm sure those attending the Festival will be able to enjoy happier and more fulfilled lives.

November Highlights. A celebration of North Devon Coast and Countryside events

It's lighting up time, literally and usually by now we'll have switched on the heating and settled down in front of a cosy fire to watch Strictly and X Factor and soon it'll be I'm a Celebrity and we could be stuck indoors till next Spring!! The good news is there are plenty of fun events this month to lure you away from the telly. The Northern Devon Nature Improvement Area are holding some free courses for woodland owners wishing to learn how to fell and extract small amounts of timber for personal use or sale using a variety of techniques. Remember, remember the 5th November when the North Devon skies will be lighting up for Guy Fawkes Night and there are a number of  organised Bonfire and Fireworks Parties around the region including a big fun night of boogying and bopping, fireworks and fun at the Big Sheep including a special toddler firework display earlier in the evening. Novemeber is also a time to celebrate the humble herring. Clovelly was once a major centre for herring fishing and their annual Herring Festival is held to promote these tasty, nutritious 'Silver Darlings' and support carefully managed fishing as carried out by our local fishermen. The village once depended on the harvest of herring, which are caught in superb condition for a short season off its coast. Records go back over 400 years and in 1749, there were a hundred herring boats in the port. When fishing was good, 9000 herring could be landed at one time. Those days of massive catches are long gone and there remain just two herring fishermen who still employ sustainable fishing methods using drift nets and long lines. Kids can enjoy the North Devon A.O.N.B. event-themed, free craft activities, there will be Shanty singers, street entertainment, local food and craft stalls, flax making and a photographic exhibition of Clovelly herring fishing and Kipperland will make sure this is a "smoking" fun day out for all the family.

4th November FREE courses ‘All things wood-fuel’ this Autumn with Northern Devon NIA. With ever rising populations of the non-native grey squirrel, damage to young trees through bark stripping is at epidemic proportions in North Devon. If you have young trees or are hoping for regenerating seedling in your wood to have a chance of establishing this course is a must. View details
5th November Guy Fawke's Fire Works Party at the Big Sheep. Bonfire and burgers - Fireworks and Fun - Boogying and Bopping! Special Toddler Firework display earlier in the evening at 6pm Doors open at 5pm Junior Fireworks - 6pm Bonfire Lit at 7pm Main Fireworks at 7.45pm Indoor Playground closes at 9:30pm Remember, remember the 5th of November - Bonfire and…
12th November North Devon Arts Broomhill Arts Hotel 8pm. A talk by Michael Brennand-Wood,an innovative and inspiring artist working in textiles. Free to NDA members, guests £5

He will also be turning herring into delicious and delicate-tasting kippers and bloaters in his smokehouse. There will also be net making, flax processing and a curragh on show provided by 'Flaxland'. There'll be a wide variety of herring dishes in the quay kitchens, cookery demonstrations, live shanty singers, street entertainment, other local food and craft stalls, a photographic exhibition of Clovelly herring fishing and A.O.N.B. event-themed, free craft activities. To see the 'Silver Darling' menu at the Red Lion Harbour Restaurant, please click here http://www.clovelly.co.uk/red-lion-hotel-harbour-restaurant Standard admission charges include all entertainment.
27th November FREE courses ‘All things wood-fuel’ this Autumn with Northern Devon NIA. Learn how to fell and extract small amounts of timber for personal use or sale using techniques including a compact tractor, small crane and extraction using horses. Practical solutions for everyday woodland owner problems are all high on the agenda. For the less mechanized or equestrian amongst you there will be practical coppicing advice including the use of tools. View details

APRIL HIGHLIGHTS. BLUEBELL WALKS, FANTASTIC FUDGE & EASTER FUN

April and no showers, fantastic. I have just seen my first fledglings, two little Blackbirds and I'm planning to sew some more wildflower seeds in the garden, a little more encouragement for the bees, birds and butterflies. The sun is out at last and we can titivate the garden, do some DIY, have a barbecue or head for the hills! Well probably not the hills but definately the North Devon Coast. It's Bluebell time in our ancient woodlands and where better to see them in all their glory than Hartland Abbey. This year you can choose one of three Bluebell Days during April.
