SPRING DROPS. NEW MUSIC VENUE OPENING IN BARNSTAPLE SPRING 2023 TO BE NAMED JCT27

JCT27 -  Barnstaple's new live music venue will be opening its doors in Barnstaple town centre this coming spring.

The rumours are true, it's finally happening, a dedicated grassroots music venue will soon be throwing its doors open in the centre of Barnstaple. JCT27 (Junction 27), a 235 capacity standing venue that will host a diverse program of live music enriching music, arts and culture in Barnstaple and further afield. Located in the centre of Barnstaple at 39-40 Boutport Street breathing a new lease of life into the previously unoccupied Post Office building.

Anticipate an eclectic program spanning a wealth of genres from rock and indie, to rap, reggae, hip-hop, grime, crossing over to house, dance, d&b as well as folk, jazz, spoken word, comedy and poetry. Expect not only a dedicated music venue, but one that prioritises sound, looks awesome, feels welcoming and inclusive serving a great selection quality drinks.

JCT27 is the latest project from Liam Farlie, local businessman and director of Alehouse and eatery Latitude 48, located on Barnstaple High Street. Liam explains the concept behind naming the venue JCT27

'Our journey towards creating this venue has been very much like a long journey back to Barnstaple from afar. Pulling off at Junction 27 represents the near completion of a long drive, not only towards Barnstaple, but also towards our goal of Barnstaple's only live music venue.

North Devonian's may not be aware or would probably care to admit, but if they have driven outside the immediate sphere, they will have a special place in their heart for Junction 27 – they may not even know that special place is there. But when we twin that familiar Junction with the newest and most exiting venue in North Devon, they will come to realise the satisfaction from a long journey to an amazing destination.'

Working with Liam is freelancer Clare Chapple, local senior events manager and programmer, Clare has worked for well over a decade in creative live music events, festivals and booking artists and has tons of experience from founding the now closed venue The Factory.

'Dedicated grass roots music venues are real cultural assets, a venue such as JCT27 will not only support the local economy, but support musicians and artists from the ground up, these venues are where tomorrows stars cut their teeth. I'm really excited to be working with Liam to build a venue that I hope we will all come to love and be a cultural landmark in North Devon in years to come.' says Clare

After an extensive refit the 235 capacity venue will have a dedicated raised stage area, complete with professional quality in house sound and lighting, artist green room area and accessible toilets and bar. Without giving too much away, the interior design features heavily on bringing the backstage feel into the venue to truly enhance the immersive gig experience for the audience. Using cheque plate aluminium, steel, flight-cases and raw unfinished surfaces to create a unique design.

'Having worked in events for many years we have a special connection and respect for "backstage" including the artists, but also the crew and equipment it takes to entertain a crowd. We wanted to pay homage to these, often, unsung heroes and try to raise a little awareness of what goes into a show.'  says Liam

Environmental factors have been consider with the build and infrastructure on this project. Reclaimed bricks have been utilised for the stage area. All of the wood, doors and other materials extracted during the tear down has been reused in other areas. Existing professional sound and light equipment owned has been serviced and re-purposed. A great deal of our high end equipment has been purchased from local sources or other venues that are closing down.

With a whole host of events in the pipeline featuring touring national and international artists along with plenty of opportunity for up and coming artists and producers to showcase their work. With community and culture at its heart the team would love to hear who you would like to see step on stage at JCT27.

London band Flyte are Devon bound this Summer. UK tour gigs include Exeter Student Guild and Sidmouth Fringe

London four-piece Flyte have a colossal summer ahead. Announcing their biggest headline to date at London’s Scala on September 19, the band are going on the road and bringing their renowned harmonies to towns across the UK – busking in City centres, and recalling where it all began on London’s Portobello Road. With regional dates alongside in Manchester, Glasgow and Birmingham, Flyte will perform at festivals including Latitude, The Great Escape and Standon Calling.

Last year, vocalist Will Taylor and keys player Sam Berridge uploaded a cover of Joni Mitchell’s ‘River’ to their Facebook page. This heart-wrenching interpretation kicked off a Flyte-movement. Racking up over 1M streams, fans wanted more sessions, and Flyte began carefully curating covers in London landmarks with towering acoustics, earning a reputation for their trademark vocal arrangements, as well as their bold live sound.

Accomplished songwriters Will, Sam, Nick, and Jon have released a flurry of alternative-indie anthems including ‘We Are The Rain’, ‘Closer Together,’ and ‘Light Me Up’ over the past few years and have amassed over 1.5M Spotify streams. ‘Victoria Falls’ spells a fresh dawn for Flyte as the band put the finishing touches on their debut album with Burke Reid in Australia.

Next Big Thing: Jack Garret, winner of the BBC’s Sound of 2016 poll announces UK Tour, forthcoming single and debut album.

Jack Garratt is pleased to announce details of a new single, Worry, to be lifted from his forthcoming debut album, Phase, released on the 19th February through Island Records.

Worry is the song that started this incredible journey for Jack Garratt, some eighteen months ago. It was an undisputed highlight of a self-released debut EP that Jack put out back in 2014, and it’s long been an impressive highlight of the young British artist/producer’s live set.

The unveiling of Worry coincides with the news today that Jack has been crowned the winner of the BBC’s Sound of 2016 poll. It smartly follows Jack being named the BRITS Critics Choice for 2016 at February’s BRIT Awards, and picking up the BBC Introducing Award at the BBC Awards back in December.

The constant building and consequent success that Jack enjoyed in the UK last year was replicated across the globe too. Support slots in the UK and US with Mumford & Sons were also surrounded by sold-out dates of Jack’s own in the UK, US, and into Europe. It’s a live show that has mutated into a spectacle. Performing solo and armed with all the instruments Jack utilizes on Phase, it’s a breathtaking, multi-faceted performance that has already translated to far bigger stages (across the British and US arenas as a support act and at festivals), for which Jack is surely now destined to head by himself.

Soon after the debut album is released in February, Jack Garratt will head out on an eleven date UK/Ireland run, kicking off in Dublin at The Academy on the 30th March 2016, and concluding at a now sold-out O2 Academy Brixton in London on the 15th April.

Guitar Virtuoso Viral Sensation JON GOMM live at The Factory, Barnstaple

Leeds based singer songwriter, guitar virtuoso and Youtube viral sensation Jon Gomm is today pleased to announce a mammoth twenty nine date solo headline UK tour for September and October 2013. Following a meteoric rise to fame last year after receiving support from a certain Mr Stephen Fry on Twitter, Jon Gomm's story is the modern embodiment of a musical, metaphorical, rags-to-riches tale that has captivated the imagination of millions of listeners. After touring the world on the back of the success of his Passionflower Video which now stands at just over 4,249,000 views and counting, Jon is pleased to be able to return to the UK to give something back to the fans that gave his very unique take on acoustic music a voice right from the start, as well as showcase brand new material from his forthcoming album Secrets Nobody Keeps (release date TBC) that will be fan funded via a PledgeMusic campaign. His eclectic musical style is drawn, magpie-like, from influences including Michael Hedges, The Beatles, Radiohead, Steve Vai, John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix and a whole host more, all lovingly appreciated and expertly crafted into Gomm's signature sound. An ambassador for the appreciation and enjoyment of all forms of music, as well as embodying the true spirit of the 21st century independent musician, things haven't always been this good for Jon. "It's surreal; it's really hard to cope with" Jon explains of his newfound notoriety "I've spent my life gigging, and the last 10 years doing my take on the solo singer-songwriter acoustic thing. I never cared about being in the shadows, and I fully expect to return to them one day." For a man who's finally clawed his way to success after a long and rocky road of sleeping on sofas and playing in car parks in Barnsley, Gomm is still ever the rationalist and is at pains to stay connected to his roots and his fanbase at every possible opportunity, even if now his celebrity endorsements and TV appearances occasionally get in the way of doing what he still loves more than anything, which is sharing his music with the people who made this all possible; his fans. "It's been a crazy and amazing 12 months for me" says Jon of the upcoming tour, humble as ever "and that's thanks to my fans here in the UK that started the snowball rolling by sharing my music far and wide, and also for supporting me at tiny gigs all over the country for the past decade. But since I got all popular all of a sudden, it seems I've been playing everywhere else on the planet, and I haven't actually had time for a solo UK tour. So it's about time all my fellow Brits got to see me play the youtube classics, and I've got some new stuff I really want them to hear as well, if that's OK."

Robbie Williams "Take the Crown" out today

As Robbie Williams looks to the future with the release of the incredible “Take The Crown” , his ninth studio album and his first for Island/Universal, it might also be interesting to remember his considerable achievements so far. In a career strewn with awards, Robbie has quite simply sold more records than any other British solo artist in history. Having sold a staggering 60 million albums over his solo career, Robbie has also won more Brit awards than any other artist in history ( a grand total of 17, to be precise). Six of his albums appear in the all time top 100 biggest selling albums in the UK whilst Williams appears in the Guinness Book of World Records for selling 1.6 million concert tickets in a day in 2006. In 2010 Robbie Williams won the Outstanding Contribution to British Music Award at the BRITS; later that year his reformation with Take That led to their album becoming the fastest selling album of the century. Since then Robbie has been working on his brand new solo album, recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jacknife Lee. The orchestra on the album was recorded at the fabled Capitol Studios in LA. The track-listing for “Take The Crown” is:
  • BE A BOY
  • GOSPEL
  • CANDY
  • DIFFERENT
  • SHIT ON THE RADIO
  • ALL THAT I WANT
  • HUNTING FOR YOU
  • INTO THE SILENCE
  • HEY WOW YEAH YEAH
  • NOT LIKE THE OTHERS
  • LOSERS (featuring Lissie)
The album was preceded by the single “Candy” which was released on October 29. Of this brilliantly addictive classic Robbie Williams pop song, written with Gary Barlow, Robbie says: “It’s a summer song, about a girl who thinks she’s great. And she might be, but she’s a bit nefarious with her ways. Some songs take an age to write and some songs just fall out of your mouth completely formed, and you don’t have to think about it. I don’t know why that fell out of my mouth and out of my brain at that particular time – it just did”. http://www.robbiewilliams.com/home

Ben Howard new single "Old Pine" and Live dates

Following the 200,000+ sales of his top 10 debut album Every Kingdom in the UK alone, two sold-outs tours of the US (multiple, and contemplating a hectic Summer of festival appearances ahead of his biggest, UK tour to date, Ben finds himself positioned as one of the most successful young singer-songwriters from the UK and Europe in years. Old Pine is a woozy, languid song, both cathartic and quietly euphoric. A long-standing live favourite, Ben’s percussive perfection is matched with the driving intricacies of his guitar playing and, smoky controlled voice. Originally released in the Spring of 2011 as an introductory EP through Communion Records, Old Pine has already played a crucial part in introducing Ben to a bigger, broader audience. He has since played to over 80,000 thousand fans at over 120 sold out performances. His UK tour later this year has now sold in excess of 50,000 tickets alone, culminating in three sell-out nights at London's Brixton Academy. Ben Howard’s music harks back to a classic and comforting time of old, albeit with a forward-thinking method of guitar performance. 2012 has very much been his year, with over six months of it still to enjoy.

"Full of Light" - Florence + The Machine video/ new single "Spectrum" with Calvin Harris

Florence Welch’s new single ‘Spectrum’ comes complete with a video by the legendary David LaChapelle and a brand new version by Calvin Harris. The world-renowned director’s last music video was in 2007 for Amy Winehouse’s ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’. Five years on, he jumped at the chance to work with another ground-breaking British singer, Florence Welch, on the video at his LA studios recently. "It's a beautiful song that really touched me and inspired me to create imagery that matches its power. ‘Spectrum’ is free of scepticism, irony, and the coldness one finds in a lot of contemporary popular music. It's the opposite – full of light, positivity and authentic joy. I hope that I can do justice to this moving modern classic. David LaChapelle “It was a complete dream to work with David La Chapelle, I collected his books as a teenager, and I fantasised that he would direct the video for spectrum from the moment the song was written, I still can’t believe it actually happened,
and I'm completely overjoyed that he felt such a connection with the song.” Florence Welch In addition to this exciting collaboration comes a brand new version of ‘Spectrum’ a huge re-work from Calvin Harris as well as remixes from hot new UK act AlunaGeorge and Maya Jane Coles. ‘Spectrum’ will be backed by ‘Breaking Down’ – both taken from new album ‘Ceremonials’. The video for ‘Breaking Down’ follows Florence on her escapades all over the world on tour, as shot and directed by Tabitha Denholm. Watch the video here:

The success continues to grow with the news that Bergling has also just been confirmed as the face of the forthcoming new Ralph Lauren campaign/range: http://www.dancingastronaut.com/2012/04/avicii-ralph-lauren-denim-supply-marketing-campaign/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook. Avicii is also quickly establishing himself as one of the most exciting and electrifying live performers in the dance arena, recently premiering his new stage show at Coachella. He has also just announced his first massive UK gigs at London’s O2 Arena on June 4th and the Dublin O2 Arena. He will then follow up with a North American Arena Tour, making history as the first DJ to ever undertake a full arena tour in the US North America as the main act.

Protect our Waves. Ben Howard "The Wolves" Video and Happy Feet

Great to hear Ben Howard's The Wolves on New Balance TV Campaign "Happy Feet" 30. Ben Howard released the single, ‘The Wolves’ on the 27th February 2012 through Island Records. It was taken from Ben’s top 10 debut album, ‘Every Kingdom’. 2011 was a hugely successful introduction to the music of Ben Howard. The young Devonshire singer-songwriter wrote his own story based on twelve months of relentless European and British touring, a string of radio-friendly, folk-informed singles, and an acclaimed debut album. Where his peers have become very British successes, Ben has been building a solid, fanatical fanbase across Europe, appearing on France’s hugely respected Taratata television programme alongside Coldplay, and selling out every show announced (including venue upgrades). In 2012 Ben will launch his music in America with ‘Every Kingdom’ finding a release in the Spring through Communion Records, with appearances at SXSW in Texas and a US tour already confirmed. Regularly compared to the likes of John Martyn, Donovan, and Bon Iver, Every Kingdom (produced by the band’s bassist and drummer Chris Bond), captures the rawness and intimacy of Ben’s live performance. The deftness of touch, the spellbinding nature of those six strings carefully finger-plucked, and Ben’s otherworldly vocal cries are spun and woven sublimely. ‘The Wolves’ was one of the songs that introduced Ben to the British public. Prior to Ben’s US live dates, he headlined a sold-out European & UK tour in February, which included two nights at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. Another UK tour is expected later in the year. Ben Howard will be headlining the Goldcoast Ocean Fest in Croyde, North Devon June 2012.

Gospel Chords from Florence and the Machine. Never Let Me Go release date April 2

Florence + the Machine are set to release ‘Never Let Me Go’ as the follow up to ‘No Light, No Light’ on April 2. This emotionally charged huge song is suffused with an elegantly weary grandiloquence, gospel chords shine the way for a multi-tracked flock of Florences to soar in free flight. “The gospel thing comes from my obsession with hymns. I’m drawn to anything that has a hymnal quality, be it Spiritualized or dusty old albums by Georgian choirs.” In the two months since the release of ‘Ceremonials’, love for Florence’s second album continues apace, a mainstay of the UK and US chart top10s with worldwide sales now in excess of 1.5 million. Fresh from a non-stop globe-spanning jaunt of live shows (the US, Brazil and a first visit to Japan), Florence has just returned to the UK where she performed at the Brit Awards & The NME Awards before embarking on her biggest UK tour to date in March. All 120,000 tickets for the spring tour were snapped up by her ever expanding army of fans up and down the country.
