What's On Bideford. Fun and frivolity in celebration of The Burton at Bideford's 70th birthday.

The Burton at Bideford welcome you to join in the fun and frivolity at the gallery in celebration of their 70th birthday. Scroll down for the art and food demos, workshops, exhibitions coming up and see what will still be running this October.

PROGRAMME OF EVENTS

From the 2nd to the 31st October, a month long programme of food-related demos, workshops, fun and frivolity in celebration of The Burton at Bideford's 70th birthday. From cooking demonstrations from top chefs and wild food foraging to sea shanties, printing and collage workshops, storytelling and more. All in aid of The Burton at Bideford.

From the 6th October unil the 10th December "Best of James Ravilious Photography Exhibition" Recently acquired by The Burton at Bideford, 'An English Eye' is a collection of photographs by renowned local artist-photographer, James Ravilious. The collection provides an important record of life in North Devon between 1972 and 1997, and also represents the best of James Ravilious' work as a whole.

Son of Eric Ravilious (war artist, engraver and designer) and Tirzah Woodward (artist and wood engraver), James Ravilious worked as an art teacher in London before moving down to Devon in 1972 where he took up photography professionally. Beaford Arts commissioned him to take images for a project called Beaford Archive, set up to capture the fast disappearing traditional landscapes and practices of rural life in Devon.

During the lifetime of the project, James Ravilious took more than 80,000 black and white photographs. The English Eye is a retrospective exhibition of James Ravilious' work. Curated by the artist himself alongside the photographer and writer Peter Hamilton (1996-97), the series of photographs grew out of a monograph of James' work published by The Royal Photographic Society's Pictorial Group in 1989. It showcases James' natural ability to perfectly capture the inner narrative of his subjects, and chronicles both the people and the landscape of rural Devon from the 1970s to the late 1990s. Working primarily in black and white, his work was influenced by English landscape artists as well as photographers such as Henri Cartier-Bresson and Edwin Smith. He developed a distinctive technique using older, uncoated lenses on his Leica rangefinder camera. A compensatory development process gave his photographs a subtle and 'silvery' quality. Last year, The Burton secured this collection for the future with the help of the Bideford Bridge Trust and the Friends of the Burton. It now forms an integral part of the Burton at Bideford's Permanent Collection.

SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS. Rollicking Shakespeare comedy coming to Great Fulford - ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL

After the rip-roaring success of Twelfth Night, Troubadour Stageworks is back and bigger than ever with this summer’s outdoor tribute to the bard!

All’s Well That Ends Well is a love story that just can’t seem to go quite right. One-sided affection, kidnapping, disguise, this play has it all. Grab a picnic, grab a bubble and join us at Great Fulford for this rollicking Shakespeare comedy.

This is an outdoor performance. We recommend that you bring blankets/chairs/cushions etc. and are welcome to bring a picnic. Come prepared for the weather with warm coats and waterproofs etc, as the performance will continue come rain come shine! W ask that you don’t bring umbrellas as these can obscure the view for other people in the audience.

Troubadour Stageworks was founded in 2017 with the aim of creating a stage in any space, and in so doing, supporting heritage venues and enabling emerging creatives to make exciting new theatre. Our Shakespeare shows are known for their original music creative adaptations and unusual staging.

Praise for 2020's Twelfth Night:
"It was one of the most enjoyable open air Shakespeares I have ever been to (and I have been to dozens!)... Such a joy in this otherwise 'midsummer madness!'"

"Thank you so much for putting on such an enjoyable evening... the love for what you are doing shone through and was hugely inspirational."

"The performance and production was a joy and delight… My hearing is not what it used to be, but I heard every single word and none of it was forced."

Event full Summer for 'Books from Devon' author, Liz Shakespeare

As Covid restrictions ease, one Devon author is looking forward to meeting readers again. Liz Shakespeare, whose books are inspired by the people, history and landscapes of Devon, will be attending a number of events this summer to sign copies of her books and to talk to members of the public.

Liz said, ‘Over the past year I have been able to continue writing, and I published my most recent book The Song of the Skylark in October 2020 with a launch on Zoom, but I have missed meeting readers at my usual talks and book signings throughout Devon.

She has written six books set in Devon, bringing to life the stories she finds in old newspapers, on gravestones and in parish records. Liz has a long Devon ancestry which she feels has given her a good understanding of the county and its people. The Song of the Skylark tells the true story of a young girl sent out as a parish apprentice to work on a remote Devon farm.

Liz will be signing copies of all six of her books in the Magpie Marquee at the following events:
  • Mid-Devon Show on July 24th
  • Hartland Farmers’ Market on August 1st
  • Sidmouth Folk Festival on August 2nd
  • Honiton Show on August 5th and 6th
  • Clovelly Maritime Festival on August 8th
  • Okehampton Show on August 12th
  • Bideford Pannier Market on August 21st
  • North Molton Country Fair on August 22nd
  • High Bickington Fete on August 28th

Community Spirit. Opening Day donatation to Children’s Hospice South West from new Quay Sports Fishing Tackle Store

Quay Sports Fishing Tackle Store opened its doors on Saturday 26 June 2021 with over 100 anglers popping in to check out the brand new ‘one stop’ fishing shop in Roundswell Barnstaple for the opening day event; many were local fishing enthusiasts who took advantage of the opening day promotions, as well as tourists from further afield who came to stock up on much needed bait and tackle whilst holidaying in North Devon.

Chris Connaughton, the Quay Sports Store Manager, said “The response from customers has been incredible – we’ve had really positive feedback from everyone who’s been into the store, especially about the store layout, location and the huge range of rods, equipment and bait we have available.  Plus some of the local Devon produced brands we sell have been flying off the shelves which is great to see”.

The Quay Sports brand has already developed a successful online business from 10 years of trading, but it was the expansion of the company into larger premises that prompted the opening of a store in North Devon, where the company first started out.   Chris added “The Quay Sports Team are keen anglers so we knew first hand that it wasn’t always easy to pick up what you needed locally.  Our goal is to focus on what customers want from a bait and tackle store in this area – and if we haven’t got what they’re looking for, we’re determined to do the very best we can to get it”.

The Quay Sports custom built store is spread over two floors, is open 7 days a week and is packed to the brim with everything a budding angler might need – plus the free parking outside has ensured a steady stream of people arriving every day.  It’s clear the store’s success is generating a lot of interest, and the company wanted to give something back to the community by donating money to their chosen charity - last week Manager Chris handed over a cheque for £150 to Ruth from the Children’s Hospice South West, which was raised from their opening day event.  Chris said “We want our store to be part of the community, supporting local anglers, local charities and local businesses, as well as providing a much needed service to tourists and visitors who come to enjoy everything North Devon has to offer.”

The Quay Sports Team couldn’t be happier right now and are looking forward to welcoming more visitors to the store as word continues to spread amongst the angling community about North Devon’s new one stop bait and tackle store.

North Devon UNESCO Biosphere launches Nature Recovery Declaration and Plan

The Biosphere has launched an ambitious new Nature Recovery Plan as our contribution to tackling the ecological emergency here in northern Devon, aligning with the Government’s 25 Year Environment Plan and the Prime Minister’s pledge for 30% of the UK land to be protected by 2030.

Join individuals, organisations, councils and businesses across the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere in signing our Nature Recovery Declaration and commit to tackling the ecological emergency through your local actions. Tap here to find out more and sign the Declaration

To promote the launch, we expect to welcome a special visitor to the area. Sacha Dench, Ambassador for the UN’s Convention on Migratory Species, is flying a 3000+ mile circumnavigation of the UK in a wind and green electricity powered paramotor. On her journey, she is stopping in northern Devon to officially launch the North Devon UNESCO Biosphere Reserve’s Nature Recovery Declaration and Plan. We are expecting her to pass through the area later this month, where she will sign the Declaration herself and speak to the Biosphere team about the importance of nature’s recovery.

Why do we need to act?

Despite great efforts from many organisations, land managers and individuals across northern Devon since the whole area achieved UNESCO status more than 20 years ago, with a few encouraging exceptions nature continues to decline – a trend that began centuries ago but has accelerated since the 1960s. Today our wildlife is a shadow of its former glory and our natural systems are ceasing to function. Iconic species like salmon, breeding lapwings, skylarks, cuckoos, house martins, many insects and wildflower species are in perilous decline – and our rivers are failing national standards. An ambitious approach to focus everyone’s actions onto agreed priorities is needed - and that is what this plan aims to achieve.

The plan’s Vision is that by 2030, nature is recovering across northern Devon. There is more wildlife-rich habitat for us all to enjoy - covering 30% of the land area – in our fields and woods, on the coast, along our rivers and on the moors. Wildlife has the space it needs to flourish. Thriving farming and forestry are helping nature to recover right across the landscape. Communities, councils and businesses are putting nature back into our towns and villages. Ambitious projects have helped bring back icons like beaver, pine marten, chough, white-tailed eagle and osprey. Our quality of life, the economy and our response to climate change are stronger for it. More is required, but we are proud to be playing our part in tackling the global ecologicalemergency.

Why should I sign the Declaration?

“If we are to turn the tide for nature’s recovery, everyone in northern Devon needs to engage through their choices and actions - all of us as consumers and by helping nature to recover where we live and work, and especially farmers and land managers who can do most to help nature recover across the landscape. We can all make a difference. It’s time for urgent and transformative local action.” Mike Moser, Chair of the Biosphere Nature Improvement Group

We hope that many individuals, organisations and businesses across the Biosphere will sign this Declaration committing to helping nature’s recovery and adding to the growing support for tackling the ecological emergency.

We welcome your feedback on the plan (by 15 August 2021)

Print, paint monochrome and spot colour. Artist's leading lines at The Burton.

We popped into the Burton Art Gallery and Museum to see artist Lucy McLauchlan's amazing exhibition: Woodlands, Wastelands & Waterways.  There is still time to view the fabulous artworks on display, you can also immerse yourself in her creative process on a grand scale by viewing the video. The works "capture specific moments spent wandering amongst urban woodlands, wastelands and waterways." We were lucky to catch her working outside back in the Spring as she painted the sweeping trails on walls of the gallery by the Cafe du Parc. A versatile artist from large murals in monochrome to Japanese style woodblock prints with spot colour. The exhibition runs until 5th July.

The 99th Westward Ho! & Bideford Art Society Annual Exhibition is also on display and showcases over 100 works: an eclectic mix of painting, sculpture, textiles, printmaking, ceramics and more. The exhibition includes work by many of the region's best artists, both professional and amateur and runs until the 4th July.

Portraits by some of the country’s most celebrated twentieth-century and contemporary artists including Barbara Hepworth, David Hockney, L.S. Lowry and Chris Ofili can be viewed in the next exhibition which runs from 13th July until the 26th September.

This will be followed by an exhibition showcasing the work of contemporary artists addressing cultural, social and political issues through the medium of clay. Featuring 35 artists and 10 nationalities: all use ceramics as a powerful way of conveying important messages about contemporary issues. A significant exhibition in light of the BLM and #MeToo movements. You are invited to take a wander through their worlds from 22nd July-6th October

Lucy Mclaughlin - The Burton at Bideford.Art Gallery and Museum"McLauchlan works on a large scale with print and paint, predominantly in black & white on varied surfaces. Her large-scale monochromatic paintings have covered multi-story buildings throughout Europe, gigantic billboards in China, huts in The Gambia, windows in Japan, walls in Moscow’s Red Square, Italian water towers, Norwegian lighthouse, Detroit car parks and abandoned NYC subway tunnels. Most recently Lucy has updated the Burton facade with a stunning mural which forms part of the exhibition." (burtonartgallery.co.uk)

Maritime Heritage Links. The Kathleen and May, The Maritime Trust and HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh

A look back at the Kathleen and May, “one of the UK’s last working wooden hulled three-masted topsail schooner”.

In 1969 the HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, who had been instrumental in the rescue and restoration of Cutty Sark, started the Maritime Trust as a means of preserving other significant British ships, with Kathleen and May, an early object of the Trust’s attention, as a national icon.  She was officially classified by the Arts Council as a National Treasure and at the HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh’s behest, took part in the 2012 River Pageant to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee.

The vessel was purchased by the late Bideford councillor and businessman, Steve Clarke in 1998. He spent 12 years lovingly restoring the then 100-year-old three-masted vessel, battling to keep her in Bideford where she was berthed at Brunswick Wharf. In 2008, Mr Clarke was awarded an OBE in the New Year Honours List for his services to maritime heritage to the community in Bideford. “The Kathleen and May left Bideford in May 2011, after a 13-month struggle by Mr Clarke to keep her berthed at Brunswick Wharf…”

“The 110-year-old vessel, is one of the famous tall ships listed in the Core Collection on the UK National Historic Ships Register, alongside such vessels as the Cutty Sark and HMS Victory".
