BEAVERS GET THEIR OWN BLOG!

A pair of Devon beavers now have their own blog! The online messages are being released by a leading conservation charity, the Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT). The blog centres on the life and goings on of a pair of European beavers which are part of a controlled experiment being run by Devon Wildlife Trust's Working Wetlands project. The beavers live in a securely fenced 3 hectare compound in north-west Devon. The charity is monitoring their everyday lives plus the effects they are having on their compound, to its tree and scrub covering, to its ground water levels and to water quality. DWT is also keen to learn more about the impacts of beavers on wider wildlife. Beavers once lived throughout the UK including Devon and were an important part of the natural regulation of our river and stream systems. They are believed to have been hunted to extinction in the C16th. The blog is being written by volunteer Vicky Halse. Vicky has a background in studying animal behaviour and was particularly keen to learn more about the beavers, how they interact with each other and with their surroundings. Vicky said: 'Having visited the site a number of times I've been amazed by just how busy they've been. Although the beavers have only been living in their compound for little more than a year, in that time they've worked hard to enlarge their lodge (home), build small dams and construct watery pathways known as 'canals'. It looks like there will be plenty to talk about in the blog!' The project, which will measure the impact the animals have on local water quality and wildlife, has been funded by Viridor Credits Environmental Company and The Truell Charitable Foundation. To read the blog and to find out more about the beavers' progress visit the 'What we do' pages of www.devonwildlifetrust.org

Caught on Camera. Clovelly Lobster & Crab Feast 2012

Sea mist and soft gentle rain added to the charm of Clovelly Harbour for the annual Lobster and Crab Feast. A remarkably windless day for the North Devon Coast, the colourful pennants and bunting fluttered limply on the beached not bobbing boats beneath the harbour wall. Clovelly events are always fun and there was a never-ending stream of folk making their way down to the already crowded Quay where there were an assortment of  arts and craft products on sale including hand-made ceramics, decorative plaques, holistic products and jewellery along with the RSPB and the National Lobster Hatchery promotional stalls.  Local fayre made by local folk, traditional award winning beer brewed down the A39 at Abbotsham, Cornish sea salt, pancakes, scrumptious hand-made cakes and savoury tarts. The local fishermen had caught a bumper harvest of crustaceans and the Red Lion bar and restaurant were packed with diners tucking into lobster, crab and seafood platters washed down with a free glass of bubbly. The highlight of the day was the Cookery Competition for the best lobster or crab dish, which was filmed by STV Productions for a new BBC2 cookery programme "Country Show Cook Off". In addition to the local entrants, TV celebrity chefs, Jun Tanaka and Galt Blackiston, secretly entered their dishes and for the first time, after four other UK events, were delighted to be awarded first and second places by the judges. Folk music was provided by Maggie Duffy & Mike Weed, Steve Tyler & Andy Clarke and The O'Marleys whilst the kids were kept entertained by Scallywag the pirate, balloon modelling, face painting, magic and some bang on AONB craft activities. As the tide was out families could also explore the beach and the waterfall beyond the Lifeboat House. Catch of the day deep fried crab balls, lobster salads, mackerel and moules mariniere, the “Perham Line” stretched all the way down to the end of the Quay. (Article by Pat Adams)

The event was in aid of the National Lobster Hatchery, Padstow, who exhibited some of their baby lobsters prior to releasing them into Clovelly Bay at the end of the day. In addition to the Prize Draw income, Clovelly Estate will donate £400 towards their re-stocking project.

"In Search of England"

H.V. Morton's best selling book, "In Search of England", was published in 1926. In it the journalist and travel writer described Clovelly as"just too quaint" and amazingly little has changed in almost 100 years since. The broadcaster, John McCarthy, has been following H.V. Morton's travels and has recently recorded a programme at Clovelly, which includes interviews with celebrity actor, Joss Ackland CBE, The Hon. John Rous, owner of the estate, Stephen Perham, Harbour Master and Niall Taylor, member of the H.V. Morton Society and author of website http://www.hvmorton.co.uk/. The programme will be broadcast on Radio 4 at 11am on Friday, 21 September. Don't Miss it http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/programmes/schedules/fm

Chance to explore Devon heathland. Free family-friendly open day.

Devon Wildlife Trust is running a free open day this month giving people the chance to explore a rare and wonderful heathland nature reserve. The family-friendly open day is being held at Bovey Heathfield Local Nature Reserve, close to Bovey Tracey. It takes place on Saturday 15 September and runs from 11am until 4pm. The event celebrates 10 years of Devon Wildlife management of this precious place. The event offers a 'behind the scenes' look at a lowland heath - a landscape which has disappeared from much of the countryside in recent decades. A series of guided wildlife walks will be led by Devon Wildlife Trust staff and volunteers. Mini-beast hunting, storytelling, pond dipping and other children's activities will also feature. A tea and cake stall will be on hand to feed hungry visitors! Jo Pullin from Devon Wildlife Trust said: "This wonderful nature reserve looks stunning at this time of year, with heather and gorse in full bloom. Open days make great introductions to our county's amazing wildlife. The day will be great chance to visit a special piece of Devon's countryside and learn about the animals which call it home." Those wishing to go on one of the walks should book in advance with Devon Wildlife Trust on 01392 279244. For all other activities people are welcome to just come along and take part. Bovey Heathfield Local Nature Reserve is located in Heathfield Industrial Estate. From Battle Road turn into Cavalier road. The entrance lies close to the entrance of Dragoon Close (postcode TQ12 6TU). And for anyone who can't make the open day, a longer self-guided wildlife walk links Bovey Heathfield to the Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserves of Little Bradley Ponds and Chudleigh Knighton Heath. A leaflet download is available for the walk at www.devonwildlifetrust.org/wild-walks/

KATE RUSBY NEW ALBUM ‘20’ TO MARK 20 YEARS OF MUSIC MAKING

The Barnsley nightingale Kate Rusby will release a new album on October 22nd ’12 to celebrate 20 years of making music. Entitled ‘20’ the album features new recordings of Kate’s favourite songs from throughout her illustrious career. From the trad folk of ‘Jolly Plough Boys’ and ‘Annan Waters’ from her solo debut ‘Hourglass’ (’98) to the seasonal beauty of ‘Home’ from her 2011 Christmas album ‘While Mortals Sleep’ via ‘Unquiet Grave’, ‘Sho Heen’ and ‘Wild Goose’ from her Mercury nominated ’99 album ‘Sleepless’, the title tracks from ‘Underneath The Stars’ (2004) and ‘Awkward Annie’ (2007) and many more, Kate dips into every corner of her catalogue to create a set that is a wonderful introduction for the uninitiated and a fabulous reinterpretation of her ‘greatest hits’ for the committed fan. In addition Kate has written and recorded a beautiful new song for this album called ‘Sun Grazers’, on which she duets with Paul Weller, who has never sounded in finer voice. Other collaborators on the album include folk giants Richard Thompson, Nic Jones, Paul Brady and Dick Gaughan, Radiohead drummer Phil Selway, bluegrass upstarts Chris Thile and Sarah Jarosz, American folk & country singer Mary Chapin Carpenter, Eddi Reader and many more. ‘20’ will be released on the Rusby family’s Pure Records label via Island Records. For this release Island has resurrected the legendary ‘Island Pink’ label on which albums by Nick Drake, Fairport Convention, John Martyn, Sandy Denny, and Richard & Linda Thompson were released during the 70s. ‘20’ will be available on double CD and digital download. The full tracklisting is:

8. Home (feat. Mary Chapin Carpenter)
9. Underneath the Stars (feat. Grimethorpe Colliery Band)
10.Bring me a Boat (feat. Declan O’Rourke)
Words and music on all songs are by Kate Rusby except ‘Jolly Plough Boys’ and ‘Annan Waters’, which are traditional songs arranged by Kate, ‘The Good Man’ whose words are a combination of trad and Kate with the tune written by Kate, and ‘Bring Me A Boat’, which has lyrics by Kate and melody by Phil Cunningham. Kate Rusby was born into a musical family in Barnsley, South Yorkshire. Her parents had a ceilidh band which Kate and her sister Emma joined at a very early age. Kate’s musical world is still very much a family affair – her parents, along with Emma and her brother Joe manage her, run her label, record her albums and book her tours, while her husband Damien O’Kane co-produces her records and plays guitar in her band. Kate’s first album release was a collaboration with another young singer – ‘Kate Rusby & Kathryn Roberts’ (’95). She has since released 9 solo albums: ‘Hourglass’ (’98), ‘Sleepless’ (’99), ‘Little Lights’ (2001), ‘Underneath The Stars’ (2004), ‘The Girl Who Couldn’t Fly’ (2005), ‘Awkward Annie’ (2007), ‘Sweet Bells’ (2008), ‘Make The Light’ (2010), and ‘While Mortals Sleep’ (2011). She was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in ’99 and has won Folk singer of the year (2000), Best album (2000), Best song twice (2002 for “Who Will Sing Me Lullabies” and 2006 for “No Names”) and Best Live Act (2006) at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards. Proof that the cottage industry approach can pay off in the 21st century, Kate has quietly sold over a million records on the family-run independent label Pure Records and regularly plays sell-out tours around the country. Kate’s 20th year anniversary celebrations continue this year with live shows all over the UK, and there will be some very special guests appearing with Kate and her band at the Sheffield and London shows in October. "I Will Wait" for Mumford & Sons new single and second album Babel

Mumford & Sons release their new single, ‘I Will Wait’ on the 24th September 2012. It is the first single to be taken from their second album, Babel, released on the same day. The story of Mumford & Sons has been written and mapped out on the road. Since before the release of 2009’s debut album Sigh No More, the band has rarely been off tour, but the recording of Babel brought them off the road and back into the studio. Many of the songs on the new record found their dynamic through years of tested live performance. ‘Whispers In The Dark’, ‘Lover Of The Light’, ‘Below My Feet’, ‘Lovers’ Eyes’ and ‘Hopeless Wanderer’ might be familiar to fans that have seen the band perform live over the past eighteen months across the world. Babel was produced by Marcus Dravs, a man whom the band trusts to replicate and to understand the importance of live energy as much as they do. In a similar fashion to its predecessor, it is a record that marries the upbeat with the intimate, and the unrestrained with the raw. It is an album the band are justifiably proud of, and follows a series of studio sessions in Devon, Somerset, Northamptonshire, and London. First single “I Will Wait” is a jubilant introduction to the music on Babel. It is a song which has evolved alongside the band, and encapsulates the very essence of what they do so well. Following their successful Gentlemen of the Road Stopover shows earlier this Summer in the UK and Ireland, and while currently touring to sold-out crowds in the US, Mumford & Sons will continue to map their journey on the road throughout 2012 and beyond. Charity hopes wildlife gardening will blossom

A leading Devon-based charity is inviting local people to turn their gardens into mini-wildlife havens. Devon Wildlife Trust is now giving free advice to budding wildlife gardeners via a new on-line blog. The blog's first entry tells readers how to plan and plant a small annual wildflower bed. It takes a practical and realistic approach covering preparing the ground, getting seed, planting and aftercare. The blog has been written by Catherine Burgess who has created her own wildlife-friendly garden with her husband and two young children at Bovey Tracey. Catherine said: 'I have a real passion for helping to make gardens attractive, productive and also great for people and wildlife. I have been a keen gardener for many years but every day brings new opportunities. I hope readers will find the blog inspiring when there have been successes and take some of the ideas forward and improve on them when things haven't worked out so well!' Devon Wildlife Trust's Steve Hussey added: 'We're delighted to be able to share Catherine's expertise with a wide audience via the new blog. We know wildlife gardening is something that more and more people are turning to. We also know just how important it is to the wildlife that uses our gardens as their homes. Hedgehogs, bumblebees, frogs, butterflies, slow-worms, house sparrows along with countless other species are increasingly dependent on people's gardens to find a safe and secure place to live. Devon Wildlife Trust's new gardening blog is available via the Wildlife Gardening webpage at www.devonwildlifetrust.org/wildlife-gardening/ And for anyone not able to access the blog, Devon Wildlife Trust's magazine 'Wild Devon' carries a regular wildlife gardening column packed full of seasonal planting tips. The magazine is free to members of  The Trust. To join call DWT on 01392 279244.

Get your walking boots on for Devon's marine wildlife

Challenge yourself by walking one of the most stunning stretches of the North Devon coastline and support Devon's marine wildlife by raising at least £50 for Devon Wildlife Trust on Saturday 11 August. Leaving Ilfracombe, DWT's Challenge Walk finishes 23 miles later at Braunton, or for those who prefer a shorter trek, after just 9 miles at Woolacombe. Learn about the amazing wildlife which lives on the shore and beneath the waves and why it is important to protect this stretch of coastline. Devon Wildlife Trust's event organiser, Dan Smith, said: 'Devon's marine wildlife is under threat, but with the efforts of local people DWT is campaigning and fundraising to help protect it. Keen walkers can do their bit by raising at least £50 on our North Coast Challenge Walk. One of the Trust's volunteers in Ilfracombe has already raised a wonderful £200 from shops and businesses in the town and surrounding area. All the money raised will go towards the vital work of the Devon Wildlife Trust helping wildlife both in the sea and on land. It's easy to pay for and register your place on the walk, just visit www.devonwildlifetrust.org/walk-challenge/ ' The walk follows part of the Bideford to Foreland Point recommended Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). MCZ's are a new designation to create a network of 127 marine protected areas around the UK, including 16 off the coasts of Devon. Currently less than 0.001% of the UK's seas are legally protected from damaging activities. The Wildlife Trusts are lobbying the government to make sure all these sites are designated. Dan Smith added: 'With luck, our walkers might spot grey seals and gannets out at sea, along with a variety of wildflowers, birds and butterflies on the cliff-top grassland and heathland. There are regular bus links at the start, finish and mid-points of the walk so you can leave the car at home! Everyone taking part in this sponsored walk will be doing their bit towards securing a future of North Devon's spectacular wildlife.' The 23 mile route starts at Ilfracombe and finishes in Braunton (option to take a shorter 9 mile challenge walk). There is a £10 registration fee and participants need to raise at least £50 sponsorship to take part. Regular bus links at start, finish and mid-points of the walk. To register visit www.devonwildlifetrust.org/walk-challenge/

What do you love about Devon's beaches? Follow the Seashore Code

What do you love about Devon's beaches? Is it walking barefoot across the sand...exploring a rockpool...riding a perfect wave? Everyone loves Devon's beaches, but this summer a leading charity is asking us to spread that love to include the very special wildlife which we share our coastline with. This summer Devon Wildlife Trust is asking all beach goers to spare a thought for our marine wildlife. From forests of seaweed, through rockpools covered in anemones and limpets, to brightly coloured birds such as oystercatchers - our marine wildlife is wonderful. Without them a day at the beach wouldn't be complete Now beach goers are being asked to play their part in protecting marine wildlife by following a simple 6-step 'Seashore Code'. The code which is illustrated by some fun cartoon characters calls on people to:
1) Handle seashore creatures with care - especially soft-bodied creatures such as anemones
2) Don't make creatures homeless - make sure shells are empty before taking them home
3) Don't leave litter - our rubbish is one of the biggest killers of marine wildlife
4) Put rockpool creatures back where you found them
5) Watch where you walk - be careful not to crush or dislodge animals such as limpets
6) Finally, look after yourself - be aware of incoming tides, especially when you are rockpooling
Devon Wildlife Trust's Steve Hussey said: 'We want everyone- young and old - to explore the wonderful wildlife we have around Devon's coastlines. But that wildlife needs a bit of tender loving care. Follow our 'Seashore Code' and you'll be doing your bit for marine nature. Devon has some very special wildlife - let's keep it that way.' The Seashore Code marks the beginning of National Marine Week 2012 (Saturday 28 July - Sunday 12 August). Join Devon Wildlife Trust for a range of fun seaside events at Wembury Marine Centre, near Plymouth. DWT's work for marine wildlife is part of a wider campaign for better protection of the UK's marine environments. Anyone who loves the beach is being asked to take part in this campaign by visiting www.devonwildlifetrust.org

Ben Howard new single "Old Pine" and Live dates

Following the 200,000+ sales of his top 10 debut album Every Kingdom in the UK alone, two sold-outs tours of the US (multiple, and contemplating a hectic Summer of festival appearances ahead of his biggest, UK tour to date, Ben finds himself positioned as one of the most successful young singer-songwriters from the UK and Europe in years. Old Pine is a woozy, languid song, both cathartic and quietly euphoric. A long-standing live favourite, Ben’s percussive perfection is matched with the driving intricacies of his guitar playing and, smoky controlled voice. Originally released in the Spring of 2011 as an introductory EP through Communion Records, Old Pine has already played a crucial part in introducing Ben to a bigger, broader audience. He has since played to over 80,000 thousand fans at over 120 sold out performances. His UK tour later this year has now sold in excess of 50,000 tickets alone, culminating in three sell-out nights at London's Brixton Academy. Ben Howard’s music harks back to a classic and comforting time of old, albeit with a forward-thinking method of guitar performance. 2012 has very much been his year, with over six months of it still to enjoy.

Author Liz Shakespeare has deep roots in the North Devon Countryside

Author, Liz Shakespeare, was born in Devon and the family stories she grew up with and the sense of being deeply rooted in the area have, she feels, influenced her writing. She draws her inspiration from the North Devon countryside, from the strong historical identity of the area and the sense of past lives that can be experienced in any long-inhabited area. She is interested in social history and particularly in the lives of the less advantaged. A synopsis for each book follows, Liz's books are available from www.lizshakespeare.co.uk
The Turning of the Tide. Young and vulnerable Selina Burman from Clovelly and her two young children are confined in the harsh environment of Bideford Workhouse. Her prospects improve when she meets Dr Ackland, a popular G.P. committed to social change. He employs her as a servant in his own household, despite the doubts of his wife and the Bideford community. Selina's work gives satisfaction, but her search for love and security does not conform to the expectations of a middle class Victorian family and threatens to damage both her own future and Dr Ackland's career. Set in Bideford and Clovelly, this novel draws on newspaper articles, letters and census returns, and powerfully brings to life the factual origins of the story.
Fever: A Story from a Devon Churchyard. How many of us have wandered through a country churchyard and been moved by the memorials to young children? In this book the author sets out to discover the truth behind a number of graves dating from just one year in a nineteenth century Devon village. Her compelling investigation reveals the harsh reality of life in a small village before the days of effective medical care. By skilfully weaving social history, research and imaginative reconstruction she builds a sympathetic portrait of a community in the midst of adversity. It is a story common to many rural communities; it is impossible to remain unmoved by the knowledge that this story is true.
The Memory Be Green: An Oral History of a Devon Village Within living memory village life has changed beyond recognition. Yet the old ways have not disappeared completely for they survive in the memories of our older neighbours. In this book men and women born early in the twentieth century recall a vanished way of life: a time when large families kept a pig to supplement a simple diet; every drop of water was carried from the village pump; the whole village turned out to help with the hay harvest and life was as slow and steady as the horse which pulled the plough.

"As far as I am aware this quirky new event will be a world first with a classical concert being performed in an animal barn. I cannot wait to watch the animal's reaction to the music, we have done a test run and they seem to enjoy it as much as the humans. Their reaction to the finale Land of Hope and Glory will be amazing to see - we hope that the human audience will be joining in as they do at the last night of the proms and maybe the sheep will contribute with the odd baa and the pigs may cover the odd squeak with the lamas, pups and chickens adding to the harmony."

"Full of Light" - Florence + The Machine video/ new single "Spectrum" with Calvin Harris

Florence Welch’s new single ‘Spectrum’ comes complete with a video by the legendary David LaChapelle and a brand new version by Calvin Harris. The world-renowned director’s last music video was in 2007 for Amy Winehouse’s ‘Tears Dry On Their Own’. Five years on, he jumped at the chance to work with another ground-breaking British singer, Florence Welch, on the video at his LA studios recently. "It's a beautiful song that really touched me and inspired me to create imagery that matches its power. ‘Spectrum’ is free of scepticism, irony, and the coldness one finds in a lot of contemporary popular music. It's the opposite – full of light, positivity and authentic joy. I hope that I can do justice to this moving modern classic. David LaChapelle “It was a complete dream to work with David La Chapelle, I collected his books as a teenager, and I fantasised that he would direct the video for spectrum from the moment the song was written, I still can’t believe it actually happened,
and I'm completely overjoyed that he felt such a connection with the song.” Florence Welch In addition to this exciting collaboration comes a brand new version of ‘Spectrum’ a huge re-work from Calvin Harris as well as remixes from hot new UK act AlunaGeorge and Maya Jane Coles. ‘Spectrum’ will be backed by ‘Breaking Down’ – both taken from new album ‘Ceremonials’. The video for ‘Breaking Down’ follows Florence on her escapades all over the world on tour, as shot and directed by Tabitha Denholm. Watch the video here:

Time to speak up for protection for our seas. Devon Wildlife Trust launches new campaign for marine advocates

100 years ago The Wildlife Trusts' founder Charles Rothschild first championed the concept of a network of nature reserves on land. Since then vital wildlife sites have secured protection and are now valued by society. Not so at sea. A hundred years on and the first national network of potential marine protected areas has been identified: 127 Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs) have been recommended to the Government for protection, of which 16 are found off Devon such as the rocky reefs of Lyme Bay, rugged coastline of Hartland Point to Tintagel and the Tamar Estuary in the South of the county. All were selected through consultation with more than one million stakeholders. However, the Government has stalled designation of any sites until 2013, citing lack of evidence. There are indications that even then only a small proportion will eventually be designated. Devon Wildlife Trust today launches a campaign to recruit 'Friends of Marine Conservation Zones'. The campaign is linked to a new online resource - the first of its kind - providing details of locations, species and habitats for all 127 recommended MCZs. By creating accessible information about all 127 sites, Devon Wildlife Trust hopes to inspire individuals, companies and organisations to stand up for the extraordinary marine species and habitats around Devon. Harry Barton, Chief Executive for Devon Wildlife Trust, said: "It took more than 34 years to get protection for sites on land. We must ensure the 127 recommended MCZs do not face the same fate in having to wait long for protection. Whilst the Government treads water, wildlife-rich areas in our seas continue to suffer degradation. "We need all 127 recommended sites to be designated, and soon - a full and functioning network covering the complete range of habitats and species." The Wildlife Trusts' new online resource provides information on each of the 127 Marine Conservation Zones recommended to Government. It outlines the special features of these precious areas, and illustrates why we simply cannot afford to lose even one of them. To find out more about your local recommended Marine Conservation Zone and sign up to be a Friend, visit www.wildlifetrusts.org/MCZfriends

Make Your Nature Count RSPB'S Summer Wildlife Survey starts this weekend

Make Your Nature CountMake your Nature Count, the summer wildlife survey helps the RSPB get an overview of how summer wildlife is faring around the UK, and they need lots of eyes watching gardens over the coming week. You can help them create a 'snapshot' of bird numbers in your region. Simply count the birds you see in your garden (or local park) for one hour between 2-10 June, and tell them what you see. They would also like you to give information on the other wildlife that visits your garden. You don’t have to see these species in the hour you spend counting birds, but let them know if you ever see them in your garden and if so, roughly how often. Click here to find out how to take part

Working Wetlands project passes major milestone

The Working Wetlands project led by Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) has this month passed the £5 million mark for the amount of money it has helped local landowners access in grants from the government. The major milestone has been reached after four years of effort in northern Devon working closely with the landowning community and is thanks to the hard work of the team's seven farm and wildlife advisors with close support from Natural England. The advisors have helped farmers to complete applications for schemes such as Higher Level Stewardship (HLS) which is administered by Natural England and which pays farmers to manage their holdings for the benefit of wildlife. Mark Elliott, Working Wetlands Project Manager said: "This is a major milestone for us and really shows how the local farming community has embraced the project. Traditional farming practices are absolutely vital for maintaining some of our very best wet grasslands, which need management to prevent them reverting to scrub. Fortunately incentives such as HLS and to a lesser extent Entry Level Stewardship exist to reward those farmers who are adopting sensitive farming practices. This represents over 2,600 hectares of wildlife rich grassland being brought into favourable management and is really starting to make headway into recreating a living landscape on the Culm!" HLS is a vital mechanism which can help rebuild lost landscapes such as Culm grassland which has 95% of its area disappear in the past century. As well as annual payments for management, these schemes also include money for fencing and hedge-laying. The Natural England Team Leader for North Devon, Nik Ward, commented that "the partnership working between Natural England and Devon Wildlife Trust is a great example of how conservation effort can be focused to target funding towards land owners with good quality habitats so that they are managed and maintained for future generations to enjoy." Mark added: "Farmers in this area are already struggling to produce cheaper food for the supermarkets, often on very difficult wet ground. As a society we are also increasingly asking them to provide other services such as clean water into our rivers and reservoirs, and a landscape rich in wildlife. Schemes such as this are vital to pay farmers for providing these other benefits. We hope our advisory work will continue for many years to come. Anyone interested in receiving advice or getting involved in the Working Wetlands project should call 01409 221823 or email working.wetlands@devonwildlifetrust.org Working Wetlands advisors are employed by DWT, with funding from a number of sources. One of these is the South West Water "Upstream Thinking " programme which aims to support farmers who are looking after the water draining off their land into rivers and reservoirs downstream . Working Wetlands has also been supported by Tubney Charitable Trust, The Environment Agency, Devon County Council, Devon Waste Management, GrantScape and Natural England.
