Coronation Meadow sows seeds for the future

A meadow with a royal stamp of approval is at the root of the spread of rare wildflowers in north Devon. The meadow in question is Dunsdon, a National Nature Reserve owned by leading conservation charity Devon Wildlife Trust. Its 140 acres near Holsworthy are some of the best remaining Culm grasslands in the UK. Culm is famous for its rich summer displays of wildflowers including orchids, Devil's-bit scabious and others that have largely disappeared from the wider countryside. In 2012 Dunsdon received royal approval when it was made Devon's Coronation Meadow. The award came from an original idea of HRH Prince of Wales. As a way to mark celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the Queen's coronation the Prince proposed that a meadow be designated in every county. 97% of the nation's wildflower meadows have been lost in the last 75 years, and it was concern for their disappearance that lay behind the Prince's initiative. Two years on Dunsdon not only continues to flourish but it is now being used as the focus point of a project which is seeing more wildflower meadows being established elsewhere. This summer Dunsdon has become a 'donor site' for wildflower seed which is now being used to create new meadows nearby. The work is being funded through the Partnership Scheme by Biffa Award; a multi-million pound fund which awards grants to community and environmental projects across the UK. The project has involved Devon Wildlife Trust staff gathering seed from the Culm grassland meadows of Dunsdon using a specialist bit of kit known as a seed harvester. The seed is then dried while a 'receptor site' is prepared nearby. The ground of the receptor site is cut to reduce its existing grass covering and then their top layer of soil is disturbed using a tractor-pulled implement similar to a harrow. In the final stage sowing takes place. Then the long wait begins watching to see what wildflowers appear the following spring and summer. In recent weeks wildflower seed from Dunsdon National Nature Reserve has been used with this method to sow ten acres of land at nearby Headon Farm. The land was purchased by Devon Wildlife Trust in March this year. Matt Boydell, the charity's Nature Reserves manager, explained: "Our new land at Headon Farm lacks the wildflowers that could support a wider range of local wildlife. Our aim is to improve it, so that's why we've embarked on this work. Seed from Dunsdon will allow us to do this. We're planting ten acres this year and then will do a further 20 acres over the next two summers." Matt continued: "This kind of work is exactly what Coronation Meadows were intended to do. They aren't meant to be standalone relics, the last remaining wildflower rich places in our countryside. Instead the intention is that they will act as the starting places for a movement to bring back wildflowers to the wider countryside." The existing wildflower meadows of Devon Wildlife Trust's Dunsdon National NatureReserve are home to many rare and threatened plants and animals including marsh fritillary butterflies, barn owls and lesser butterfly orchids. The charity's hope is that these species will now begin to spread along with the seed of Devon's first Coronation Meadow.

FREE courses ‘All things wood-fuel’ this Autumn with Northern Devon NIA

Everyone likes to be cosy and warm. With Autumn round the corner and with rising energy costs it’s little wonder that people are increasingly considering the best way to heat their homes. With this in mind a series of FREE wood-fuel workshops is now being offered to people in north Devon. For some, woodfuel might conjure images of a log burner used only for special occasions, but in years gone-by wood from Devon’s hedgerows and woodland was one of the main sources of domestic heating. You don’t have to look far in Devon to find a woodland which could potentially be managed for abundant supplies of this renewable, sustainable fuel. Happily, in addition to saving money on your heating and helping lower carbon emissions, managing woodland for woodfuel can also be good news for wildlife too. Whether you’re a home owner thinking of new ways to heat your house, or a woodland owner interested in how your woodland might best be managed to contribute to the local economy, FREE courses led by industry experts and provided by the Northern Devon Nature Improvement Area Project provide a wealth of information. 

• September 16th - If you are thinking of renewable heating with wood-fuel - either woodchip or logs, and taking advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive, this workshop will help you to understand how it all works, from accessing the woodlands to extract the timber to processing for chip-wood or logs. 
• September 18th - Guided visits to local boiler installations to demonstrate the range of options available to anyone thinking of taking advantage of the Renewable Heat Incentive. 
• October 2nd – A guided woodland walk to learn how Devon woodland can be managed for both biodiversity and economic value. 
• October 24th - From 2015 all woodlands will only be eligible for grant aid if an approved management plan is in place. Learn what is required in the plan, how to access the grant and hear advice for those wishing to write the plan themselves or to contract the services of a professional. 
• 4th November – With ever rising populations of the non-native grey squirrel, damage to young trees through bark stripping is at epidemic proportions in North Devon. If you have young trees or are hoping for regenerating seedling in your wood to have a chance of establishing this course is a must. 
•  27th November – Learn how to fell and extract small amounts of timber for personal use or sale using techniques including a compact tractor, small crane and extraction using horses. Practical solutions for everyday woodland owner problems are all high on the agenda. For the less mechanized or equestrian amongst you there will be practical coppicing advice including the use of tools.

SEPTEMBER HIGHLIGHTS. A celebration of North Devon Coast and Countryside events

Hope you all had a good summer, not a bad August weatherwise even though it was a bit of a drab Bank Holiday. The sun, sails, gigs and crowds came out on the 23rd August for the homecoming of Bideford's own Kathleen and May. September highlights include the Big Sheep's first ever Wedding Fayre while Sea Ilfracombe celebrates all things maritime including a visit from the Waverley. The world's last sea-going paddle steamer will be offering Sail Away Days from 29th August to 7th September. Round the Bay, Clovelly pays tribute to those famous Lobsters at the annual Lobster and Crab Feast, boat trips, fishy treats and shanties with kids fishy fun activities. For steam enthusiasts who prefer to travel on land it's Lynton & Barnstaple Railway Autumn Gala, Woody Bay Station's biggest event of the year.

7th September Lobster and Crab Feast. We pay tribute to Clovelly's famous lobsters and crabs with a day of live folk music, quay kitchens, beer tasting, prize draw, arts and crafts stalls and cookery demonstrations. WHEN I WAS YOUR AGE - FAMILY EVENT TO PRODUCE SHORT FILM ABOUT WORKING LIVES OF SOUTH MOLTON PEOPLE

South Molton residents will have a chance to share their stories of working life at a creative multi generational local history workshop on Saturday 20 September 2014. The When I Was Your Age: South Molton event is a chance for local people of different generations to come together and share their memories and aspirations. Guided by community artist Jo Bushell, the group will be collaborating on a work of art using silhouette and shadow. The workshop is suitable for all ages from seven up and no artistic experience or skills are necessary. Participants are welcome to bring along their photographs and artefacts to share with the group. Amanda McCormack, Creative Director of NDMI, says "We recently ran a similar event in Braunton and it was a great success! It was wonderful to see the different generations interacting and learning from each other. Using the creative element of the workshop enables the participants to get to know each other in a relaxed setting and to work collaboratively on a piece of art. We have chosen the topic of work for this event because the South Molton area has a strong rural identity and we are expecting to hear some interesting tales about the wool trade and farming and maybe some surprises too! Involving the younger people is a fascinating way of capturing the differences between work and aspirations today and in the past and makes for a more unusual and entertaining oral history film." 

The workshop is free but places are strictly limited so booking is essential. SHORT SHORTS FILM COMPETITION. WE WANT YOUR ONE MINUTE FILMS ABOUT NORTH DEVON PEOPLE

The Summer may be slipping away from us but you still have six weeks left to enter the North Devon Moving Image Short Shorts one minute film competition. Community Film Making Organisation North Devon Moving Image (NDMI) are looking for your sixty second videos about interesting characters in North Devon. There are some great prizes to be won including an HD video camera, a night out at The George Hotel in South Molton and a family ticket to Bideford Cinema. Amanda McCormack, Creative Director of NDMI, says "We want the people of North Devon to capture the characters and stories of North Devon in moving image. They could be a friendly neighbour, a great sports person, a chatty shopkeeper or Grandad with his stories of old North Devon. The best films will be shown at a screening and prize presentation later in the year and will be shared and preserved in our online archive." Joe Bulmer from Appledore entered his short film A Day with an Auctioneer made at South Molton Livestock Market;"I chose South Molton’s livestock market because it’s one of the town’s major features yet very few people understand what goes on there. I learnt a lot in the brief time I worked there and was struck by the spirit and banter of the place. I’d been yearning to do make a film for some time and couldn’t decide on a subject. I guess the experience has taught me to film more and think less, if that makes sense."

Charismatic Salmon Netters Caught on Film

Salmon Netting on the Taw and Torridge is the second short film to be released in the North Devon Boat Stories series. Once upon a time catching salmon was a way of life for almost everyone living by the Taw or Torridge rivers in North Devon. The salmon population declined in the rivers over the years and the number of netting licences were restricted. As numbers of salmon in the rivers dwindled further, in 2002, the rods men offered to buy out the remaining nets men. Three boat owners refused the offer and these are the only licensed netters remaining on the estuary today. This short film is an insight into a disappearing traditional way of life and introduces us to 84 year old Stephen Taylor and his wife Sheila as they cast their seine net for salmon on the River Taw. Amanda McCormack, Creative Director of North Devon Moving Image, hosts of the Boat Stories project, says "This film is a real gem. It oozes charm both from the charismatic couple and the tranquil scenes on the estuary. It's so important to capture lives like this on film, traditional skills which may well disappear in the future - even in our own lifetimes." Film producer Jo Stewart-Smith has dug up so much gold when it comes to stories for her films that (rather than file them away) she is sharing them via the Boat Stories website with blogs on the film making, snippets of stories from her subjects and out take video clips. Jo says "Simon Vacher (the cameraman) and I were inspired by filming this lovely couple working hard together outdoors and having a good laugh. We were also lucky to be in a fantastic location – the Taw & Torridge estuary – with beautiful mellow, evening light." "I’m not sure I can row a boat against the tide or haul in a heavy salmon net now – let alone at 84! They were so natural when we filmed them – they just got on with the job and let us follow them around." In September there will be a public screening as part of the Salar the Salmon exhibition at the Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon where you will also have a chance to meet Steven and Sheila Taylor and hear their stories in person.

Thanks to the positive response to the first two Boat Stories films NDMI has received further funding from Northern Devon FLAG to produce four more films in the Boat Stories series, bringing the total up to ten films. Production will be complete by the end of Summer 2015 and the films will be available free to watch online and at libraries and information centres in North Devon.

Weaving the Community Back Together in Braunton

A collaboration between community film making organisation North Devon Moving Image (NDMI) and local artist Jo Bushell has brought together a group of Braunton residents to talk about life in the North Devon village. The Brauntonians, whose ages span from 7 to 90, came together at St Brannock's Church Rooms on Tuesday 29 July 2014 to create a collaborative art work inspired by their memories of the bulb farm and maritime heritage of the area. With the help of Jo the group wove a large Carrick Bend knot representing the local landscape of land meeting sea and the youngsters decorated it to represent the colours of the bulb farm at the Great Field in Braunton. Prompted by the intergenerational conversations on the day they then printed individual words on cloth to attach to the knot. Creative Director of NDMI, Amanda McCormack says the event was a great success "It was fascinating to hear what life was like in Braunton in the past and really touching to see the older and younger members of the group interacting and learning from each other. There was an immense positive energy in the room on the day and we have produced a short film of the event as a way of sharing that with others." Jo Bushell agrees "It was very moving day in many ways ... weaving the community back together. As an artist this what it's about - creating spaces for people to dialogue and share their stories so that we can reshape our communities and make them stronger. For me the art is the process of enabling this to happen. A great big thanks to NDMI for asking me to be part of this. It has been an inspiring journey working with you to bring this together. It clearly had a huge impact on the older members of our group who came along. Much more of this is needed." Ninety year old Les Neville, a relative newcomer to Braunton having lived there only 20 years said "It's made a break for me, sitting at home on my own every day. I've really enjoyed the day meeting so many young people and happy people and talking about our past lives." Brian Clarke added "I've learned a lot of things about Braunton I ought to have known I suppose ... having lived here for eighty odd years, I've learned a lot!" Eight year old Iola said "Luckily one of the people that we had in our group, his family had been living in Braunton a long time so he told us what's been going on in the past so now we know more about it." This project was made possible with a grant from Fullabrook CIC and the help of Braunton Museum, an Aladdin's cave of fascinating facts and artefacts.

Local people asked: 'Do you want beavers to remain?'

People are being asked their views about the future of Devon's first wild beaver population for more than 300 years. A public meeting is being held to discuss the beavers on Tuesday 19 August at The Institute in the east Devon town of Ottery St Mary (EX11 1HD), close to where the beavers are believed to be living on the River Otter. The host's, Devon Wildlife Trust, are inviting people to make their views known from 3pm on the day with a formal public meeting scheduled for 7.30pm that evening. It is not known where the beavers came from or how long they have been on Devon's River Otter, although anecdotal evidence suggests they may have been resident for several years. Nor is it clear how many animals are present. Recent film footage of the beavers' broadcast on BBC1 shows adults and kits (baby beavers), suggesting that a breeding population has established itself. In July, Defra announced its intention to catch and remove the beavers, citing the risk of disease and the animals' potential impact on the landscape as reasons. However, a growing number of voices have stated that the beavers should remain; saying that beavers were once a part of the English landscape and that they could be again. The beavers' supporters cite the role the animals could potentially play in flood alleviation, water quality improvement and their positive impacts on other wildlife as reasons for them to stay. Devon Wildlife Trust's Steve Hussey urged people to attend the specially convened meeting: 'The wild beavers on the River Otter have certainly attracted a lot of attention. We've had media interest from as far away as New Zealand and the USA wanting to know what their fate will be. This event is the opportunity for the local community to now make their views known.' Steve continued: 'We need to hear from people whether they think the beavers should remain as part of their local landscape, or whether they think they should be removed.' The beaver consultation day will include presentations from beaver experts including Prof Bryony Coles of the University of Exeter. Evidence from beaver trials conducted in other parts of the country will also be on show. Steve continued: 'We want the event to be a chance for people to ask questions and to tell us their views. As an independent charity working for the county's wildlife, Devon Wildlife Trust thinks the beavers should remain but only after it's been established if they are disease free, and only if the local community wants them there. This event will help us get an answer to the second of these two questions.' The event is free to attend and there is no need to book in advance.

AUGUST HIGHLIGHTS. A celebration of North Devon Coast and Countryside events

After a glorious July it’s a busy time for tourist-based businesses as visitors are flocking to the North Devon Coast. It’s a great time for locals and holidaymakers with a host of exciting things to see and do including the North Devon Show, RNLI Rescue Days, local town and village events, carnivals, fetes, fairs, festivals, outdoor theatre performances and of course trips to the beach. There are plenty of fun and craft based activities for kids at local art centres and museums. Families can enjoy rock-pooling and pond dipping around the coast, crabbing off Appledore Quay, safe walking and cycling on the Tarka Trail while ernest ramblers can enjoy scenic walks amongst the blooming heather on the South West Coast Path or Exmoor. Although July was the sunniest on record, it failed to bring the butterflies to my garden in quantity even though the Buddelea bloomed earlier than ever but yesterday they finally arrived and I was at last able to record some for the Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count. This is a free fun thing especially for the kids to do while they learn. Just 15 mins in your garden or favourite place jotting down the different species then submitting the results. You can download a free Butterfly ID Chart or there is even a free smartphone app to help you. In my garden yesterday I saw 5 Small Tortoishelle, 1 x Comma, 5 Peacock, 2 Red Amiral, 2 Small and 1 Large White, 1 Speckled Wood and was thrilled to see 2 Common Blue fluttering over the Privet Hedge. This month the RNLI launched their “Respect the Water” Campaign and if you have ever been in peril on the sea you will know what a great job they do, so here is a chance for you and the family to help raise funds for your local RNLI Lifeboat Stations and their volunteer crews. See below the events being held in aid of the RNLI Lifeboat Stations around the North Devon Coast.

2nd August to 3rd August Lifeboat Weekend at Clovelly Held in aid of the RNLI, it is a popular celebration of the Clovelly Lifeboat. The Lifeboat House will be open both days to the public. On Saturday afternoon there will be a sponsored swim from Bucks Mills to Clovelly, followed by a barbecue. Sunday will be a fun-packed family day with games, competitions, entertainment, food & drink and music. There will be a coconut shy, a tug of war, local stalls and children's activities. Clovelly - In Time to the Music

Clovelly embraces it's fishing and maritime history each year with a series of fun festivals. This Sunday it's the Maritime Festival  in aid of  the North Devon Hospice. This is a clip from last years Lobster and Crab Fest. I was relaxing, listening to the Tennessee Waltz and watching the boats coming in and out of the harbour seemingly in time to the music.

Clovelly Maritime Festival, Sunday 20th July. Starting at 10am, the day will be full of fun and cram-packed with a programme of all sorts of activities and entertainment for all ages. There'll be lively music, cookery demonstrations, crafty creations and family activities throughout the day. The quay will be full of seafood kitchens, arts and crafts and facepainting too. The New Inn, in the heart of the village, will be offering two lunch specials and fresh strawberrry and cream teas with home made scones. So do come along and enjoy this fun-packed day out, held in aid of the North Devon Hospice.
**Young people (7-16 years) will have free entry if they come dressed as a pirate or a mermaid. Under 7s have free entry anyway, but we would love it if they come dressed up too.

Scarce dragonfly finds new Devon home

A real rarity has been discovered at a Devon nature reserve. The rarity in question is an aptly named dragonfly known as the scarce chaser. It was seen recently at Devon Wildlife Trust's Old Sludge Beds nature reserve on the outskirts of Exeter. The charity's site is a well-known haven for local wildlife, but the sighting of a scarce chaser still came as something of a surprise. The nature reserve is now thought to be one of only a handful of places in Devon in which scarce chasers have ever been recorded. The dragonfly was spotted by Keith Richards, a member of the British Dragonfly Society. At first Keith was unsure of his find but after taking photos he had it confirmed by the British Dragonfly Society who told him: "This is a very interesting record - the first ever seen at the Old Sludge Beds. The species first appeared at the nearby Exminster Marshes in 2007 and small numbers have been seen there since. It's possible that the species has bred at the Old Sludge Beds, but more likely it has flown over or under the M5 to get there." The adult male scarce chaser has a bright blue abdomen with patches of black, while the adult female and juvenile male each possess bright orange abdomen. It is about 45 mm in length with a wingspan of 74 mm. This dragonfly is considered a 'species of special concern', making it one of the rarest in the UK. Stephen Hussey from Devon Wildlife Trust said: "We are thrilled by this news. This dragonfly's appearance at our nature reserve suggests we are being successful with our management. Scarce chasers need wetlands with dense vegetation. In the last 100 years our countryside has lost many of its wetlands and wildlife like this dragonfly has struggled to survive. But at the Old Sludge Beds the mix of wet lagoons, reeds and submerged plants seem to have provided it with the ideal conditions. We are so pleased that it has found a home with us." The scarce chaser was spotted in early summer and with a flying season which extends into August it could be seen for some weeks to come. Steve added: "Old Sludge Beds nature reserve makes a wonderful place to visit in the summer. Being close to Exeter and the Exeter Canal cycle path the reserve already attracts good numbers of visitors. But the news that this rare dragonfly has taken up residence may mean that those numbers are boosted still further." The Old Sludge Beds is one of 48 wildlife havens looked after by Devon Wildlife Trust. The charity is keen for people to know that they are free to enter and make wonderful places to explore the county's landscapes and wildlife. More details from www.devonwildlifetrust.org

NEW BOAT STORIES FILM HIGHLIGHTS CONSERVATION SUCCESS FOR NORTH DEVON LOBSTERS

A new short film by North Devon film maker Jo Stewart-Smith takes a close up look at the work of Ilfracombe lobster fisherman Geoff Huelin. The first short film in the Boat Stories series, Lobster Potting and Berried Hens, looks at life as a lobster potter and explores the positive effects that the Lundy no-take zone has had on the lobster population off the shores of North Devon. Sarah Clark from Devon and Severn Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority (IFCA) explains in the film "This has been the only no take zone for many, many years which allowed that opportunity to start looking at the benefits of closing an area to fishing. The research has shown the abundance within the no-take zone, the increased population of lobsters and the potential for spillover" (increase in the population of lobsters outside of the zone available for catching). Lobster Potting and Berried Hens is a delightful glance at a traditional family business and emphasises the importance of working with nature in this special part of the world. Amanda McCormack, Creative Director of North Devon Moving Image (NDMI) who are hosting the Boat Stories project loves the film "We are really pleased with what Jo and her crew have done with the Boat Stories brief. As well as sharing stories of contemporary life in North Devon an important part of our remit is to give work to local film makers. We want to fly the flag for the documentary film industry in North Devon and this project shows that we definitely have local talent worth celebrating." The major funder of the Boat Stories project is Northern Devon FLAG (Fisheries Local Action Group). FLAG Programme Manager Jenny Carey-Wood says “Using film to entertain, inform and engage is vital in reaching a wide audience of children, local people and visitors, to meet the FLAG priority of increasing awareness and understanding of both fishing and the marine environment in North Devon. " Jenny adds "This excellent first film about an Ilfracombe potter has already been enthusiastically received by local, national and European audiences.” All of NDMI's films are to be shared freely and will not only build a moving image archive for the future but serve to highlight the way we live our lives in North Devon today. In this film Geoff Huelin sums up "I can't see why we can't continue fishing as we are, as we've always done. Providing the berried lobsters are released and the undersized lobsters are put back and it's managed sensibly ... there's a living for everybody."

Lynmouth to host public search for seashore creatures on the 13th July

A new 'citizen science' project to discover more about Exmoor's coastal wildlife is holding its first public event on the beach at Lynmouth on Sunday 13 July. The Exmoor coast is home to a wide range of marine wildlife, from Atlantic grey seals to colourful strawberry beadlet anemones. But there are many gaps in our knowledge of how different species are faring and how their numbers might be influenced by threats such as invasive species and climate change. The Shoresearch Exmoor project aims to collect information on the animals and plants of the seashore, at eight beaches along the coastline of the national park. A combination of expert-led surveys and public rockpooling events will help to build a clearer picture of Exmoor's coastal wildlife. Surveys have been under way since the spring, and now for the first time all beach-lovers and wildlife enthusiasts can get involved in Lynmouth on Sunday - with no prior knowledge required! Shoresearch Exmoor activities are being led by volunteer interns at Devon Wildlife Trust, all recent graduates from Plymouth University's Marine Institute. Volunteer Sara Marshall said: "The event at Lynmouth is a fantastic opportunity for local people and visitors to get better acquainted with Exmoor's rich coastal wildlife. Our range of species cards will help you identify the creatures we find amongst the rocks." Sara continued: "There are fascinating creatures to look out for in Lynmouth's rockpools - you might see starfish that can regenerate lost arms, or anemones with more than 200 tentacles. But by also looking out for exotic species of oyster and seaweed from the Pacific Ocean that have colonized here, people can really help increase our understanding of invasive species on the Exmoor coast." Much of the Exmoor coastline is included in the Bideford to Foreland Point recommended Marine Conservation Zone (MCZ). This is one of three north Devon MCZs being considered for designation by the government next year. Devon Wildlife Trust's Senior Marine Conservation Officer Richard White said: "Bideford to Foreland Point was proposed by the local community as an area to protect local marine wildlife. But designation of this stunning stretch of coast as a Marine Conservation Zone has been delayed by the government due to a lack of evidence. By getting involved in the Shoresearch Exmoor event at Lynmouth, everyone can help increase the evidence we have so the case for protecting local wildlife is made stronger. And all you need to do to help is enjoy a fun day at the beach!" The event starts at 10:30 on Sunday with a rockpool ramble at midday, followed by a timed species search. All activities take place on the east side of Lynmouth beach with the meeting point clearly signed by coloured Devon Wildlife Trust flags and banners. JULY HIGHLIGHTS. A celebration of traditional Coast and Countryside events.

It's certainly heating up, such great weather, a little sunshine and blue skies really do enhance our towns, villages and of course our glorious North Devon Coast and Countryside. Perfect for a walk on the beach, a trek on the South West Coast Path or a wander over Exmoor. Time for Roses and a picnic in the park. The birds have certainly been making the most of the early Spring and after the first fledglings left the nests in May, some are already brooding or nest-building again so check before getting out that noisy hedge trimmer. This is also time when I finally see our little hedgehog family, they visit at night and always enjoy the peanuts I leave at the door. July is traditionally the time to celebrate all things Maritime. Fun-filled festivals and regattas with a host of madcap events. You can watch Birdmen hurling themselves off Ilfracombe Pier, Bunjee jumpers hurling themselves off the Torridge Bridge, wobbly walkers hurling themselves off greasy poles at Appledore while pirates, mermaids and shanty singers will dodge the throng on the cobbled quay down along Clovelly. This action packed month will end with a "Call to the Hounds" at the Woolsery Agricultural Show and a little of what you fancy does you good ‘George’s Marvellous Medicine’ and a Pimms on the lawn at Hartland Abbey. 12th to 13th July Lundy Gig Row Clovelly. The row from Clovelly to Lundy and back across 32 miles of open seas is a huge test of endurance. Depending upon the weather and tides, it can take up to four hours. Do come along and support the brave crews! They leave Clovelly at 8am and arrive at Lundy at about 11am. The following day they leave Lundy at about 1pm and arrive back at Clovelly at about 4pm.

When I Was Your Age! Fun FREE intergenerational art and oral history event in Braunton

Kick off the summer holidays with a fun FREE creative event for families in Braunton. We are looking for twelve people from Braunton of varying ages (from 8 upwards) to take part in a workshop with professional artist, Jo Bushell, exploring the topic of 'community' today and in the past. Community film making organisation, North Devon Moving Image (NDMI), will be producing a short film of the event to be shared in their online collection. Creative Director Amanda McCormack says "We are looking for Grannies & Grandads, Grandchildren and those inbetween to take part in a collaborative work of art. No creative skills are necessary and the project is designed so that people of any age and ability can have fun and make a contribution. We will be using the workshop to draw out stories of what community means to our local people." Jo Bushell will work with the group, using rope weaving and decoration to represent the interweaving of land and sea which sums up the environment and heritage of Braunton. Following her research for the project at Braunton Museum Jo Bushell says "The reason I chose to highlight land and sea based industries is because it is something really quite unique to communities in North Devon. One thing that really strikes me about this topic is that, as we can see from photographs in the museum there was a strong sense of camaraderie among the workers within both these industries. People worked hard and conditions were harsh but they had to work very closely as a team to get the work done and this in turn brought people together. The bulb farm pictures particularly demonstrate this and you get the impression that they regarded themselves as part of a close knit group sharing life, hardship, laughter on a daily basis."

Funding from Fullabrook CIC has enabled NDMI to offer this as a free event and there will even be refreshments provided! SHORT SHORTS FILM COMPETITION - LOOKING FOR NORTH DEVON'S MOST COLOURFUL CHARACTERS

Eccentric, inspirational, fascinating or just plain bonkers, we all know plenty of colourful characters in north Devon. Now you have a chance to capture these characters on video and preserve their lives and their stories for posterity.  North Devon Moving Image (NDMI) is calling for submissions of sixty second video profiles of local people; it could be your postman, a chatty market stall holder, a selfless volunteer, your football coach or even your cheeky Grandma! First prize is a Sony Handycam HDR-CX220E kindly donated by NDMI supporters J&A Cameras and other prizes include a night out with entertainment and a meal at The George Hotel, South Molton.  The competition is open to all ages, free to enter and you don't need expensive equipment or professional software to make your short film.  You could use your mobile phone, digital camera or tablet.  Just make sure you have permission to film and the right to use any music you want to include and off you go! Amanda McCormack, Creative Director of NDMI says "Here at NDMI we believe in the power of film and know that wonderful stories can be told in just a minute. We want to get to know the people who make up the communities of north Devon.  We want to hear their stories and be amused, inspired or have our heart strings tugged."

Wildflowers spread colour across city

A dash of bright and beautiful colour is set to spread across some of Exeter's best known green spaces this summer. Last year saw more than three hectares of new wildflower meadow planted across the city. Now, with summer just beginning, the seeds have grown into plants and their beautiful blooms are beginning to show off their true colours. The new wildflower meadows are the work of local residents and school students. All volunteered under the Exeter Wild City initiative, a scheme led Devon Wildlife Trust and Exeter City Council, and funded by The Big Lottery Fund and Devon Doctors. The aim was simple, to create colourful summer flower displays and help some of our most important city wildlife including minibeasts such as bumblebees, hoverflies and butterflies. In recent months more wildflower seed has been sown across Exeter by the City Council, creating wildflower beds in some of the city's most popular green spaces including Bull Meadow, Rougemont Gardens, St Thomas Pleasure Grounds and Northernhay Gardens. Planting involved a wildflower seed mix of colourful plants such as cornflower, poppy, corn chamomile and corn cockle. The results of all this planting and hard work is now beginning to show. Galvin Short from Exeter City Council said: "Biodiversity and sustainability are relatively new 'buzz words' but in partnership with Devon Wildlife Trust we have been chipping away at bland evergreen landscapes for over ten years. Most of our principal parks now have a wild corner which we leave for the mini beasts and nesting birds and our larger sites have significant areas that are maintained as wildflower meadows or as a developing wildlife habitat. The results of this project are there for all to see, and indeed listen to. Even in our city centre parks we have very active colonies of bats, bees, butterflies and moths and an almost jubilant dawn chorus." Emily Stallworthy of Devon Wildlife Trust said: "Cities such as Exeter are essential places for wildlife such as bumblebees, butterflies and birds. People's gardens and city parks provide a huge variety of flowering plants that help to feed pollinating insects. These insects then go on to do a very important job in feeding us by pollinating our orchards and crops." Emily continued: "For anybody wanting to help pollinators at home the best advice is follow the principles that we've used on this Exeter Wild City project. Our main aim has been to provide a variety of flowers throughout the year, in this way we can feed insects with nectar over long periods of time. Different insects also prefer different types of flowers, for example, open flowers such as daisies, and bell shaped such as foxgloves, so it's good to have a mix. It's also best to avoid hybridised flowers such as petunias and begonias as these produce little or no nectar for insects." JUNE HIGHLIGHTS - Classic Father's Days, Dog Shows, Music Festivals, Nature Walks & Outdoor Theatre Performances

It's blooming June, time for Father's Day, Honeysuckle and Roses, Strawberries and Cream and Wimbledon and the World Cup. Here are just some of the eclectic mix of North Devon Local events from a Classic Car Day for Dad's at the Big Sheep, a Women in Waves at Putsborough Beach and the very first Electric Circus Festival at the Globe in Torrington, a Dog Show and Country Fair at Dowland Farm, Winkleigh and here's hoping the sun comes out for the Outdoor Theatre performances running at Hartland Abbey. This is also a good time for nature lovers to join Northern Devon Nature Improvement Area project on their special walks exploring hedgerows, Culm grassland and  wildflower meadows.
