Swallows, squelchy boots and swollen streams

We set off for Hartland Abbey in torrential rain on Sunday.  Appropriately dressed for a wet  walk through the bluebell woods we were pretty confident the rain would ease up so we could get some pics. I especially wanted to get some shots of those pretty little curly black lambs with the long tails. We kept to the track and encountered a few puddles created by water streaming down around the trees from the uplands. Looked out across the bluebells and the now pungent wild garlic beneath dripping hats. Quite comically the sheep were all facing the same direction standing stock still while the cattle huddled together in a line at the edge of the long meadow under the trees. We could hear and see the turbid Abbey River as it thundered down then watched as it spilled out into a weirdly calm sea at Blackpool Mouth. Sadly the rain was relentless so the cameras stayed in the bag. Despite our bedraggled appearance and squelchy boots we really enjoyed our walk and  paused for a while to watch the recently arrived Swallows as they swooped and scooped in the newly formed pools in the meadow beyond the bridge. There was a warm welcome back for us from the guy in the kiosk and the ladies in the Abbey Tea Rooms.  Pat Adams 29th April 2012.

Clovelly on Song for its first Folk Festival

The picturesque village of Clovelly in North Devon will stage its first folk festival over the weekend of 5th and 6th May. Folk music in Devon has undergone a massive revival recently. Live music invites participation; it binds communities and brings new sound and colour to people's lives in a time of austerity. The Clovelly Folk Festival aims to do just that. The village harbour stage will be the setting for many talented Devonian singers and musicians with an eclectic mix of styles and voices, from blues and samba to the songs of the West Country and beyond.Wren music of Okehampton has the Baring-Gould archive of traditional music and together with the appearences of  both Jim Causley, Jackie Oates the festival will have a genuine West Country base. There are also many gifted musicians appearing who are local to Clovelly including Jim Crawford, Nick Wyke, Beckie Driscoll, Tina Bennett, Chloe Bix and Mario Lee. The parish church will be hosting two concerts by local musicians; its location and interior beauty forming a unique venue. During the weekend, workshops for both children and adults wil be held in the village and parish hall. This is a festival which locates traditional music in a traditional village, little changed in hundreds of years and will provide a Spring time spectacle for all.
Clovelly Folk Festival Saturday 5 May-Sunday 6 May - Tickets available from The Plough Arts Centre Box Office on 01805 624624 Adults £15; Families (2A+2C) £35.

Protect our Waves. Ben Howard "The Wolves" Video and Happy Feet

Great to hear Ben Howard's The Wolves on New Balance TV Campaign "Happy Feet" 30. Ben Howard released the single, ‘The Wolves’ on the 27th February 2012 through Island Records. It was taken from Ben’s top 10 debut album, ‘Every Kingdom’. 2011 was a hugely successful introduction to the music of Ben Howard. The young Devonshire singer-songwriter wrote his own story based on twelve months of relentless European and British touring, a string of radio-friendly, folk-informed singles, and an acclaimed debut album. Where his peers have become very British successes, Ben has been building a solid, fanatical fanbase across Europe, appearing on France’s hugely respected Taratata television programme alongside Coldplay, and selling out every show announced (including venue upgrades). In 2012 Ben will launch his music in America with ‘Every Kingdom’ finding a release in the Spring through Communion Records, with appearances at SXSW in Texas and a US tour already confirmed. Regularly compared to the likes of John Martyn, Donovan, and Bon Iver, Every Kingdom (produced by the band’s bassist and drummer Chris Bond), captures the rawness and intimacy of Ben’s live performance. The deftness of touch, the spellbinding nature of those six strings carefully finger-plucked, and Ben’s otherworldly vocal cries are spun and woven sublimely. ‘The Wolves’ was one of the songs that introduced Ben to the British public. Prior to Ben’s US live dates, he headlined a sold-out European & UK tour in February, which included two nights at London’s Shepherds Bush Empire. Another UK tour is expected later in the year. Ben Howard will be headlining the Goldcoast Ocean Fest in Croyde, North Devon June 2012.

Circle of Life. End note for the Severn Sands

The sun was out in Bideford last week so took the opportunity to take some photos of the Quay and Victoria Park. Had a coffee on Bideford’s first floating venue, the new Café on the Barge down Bank End. The ex-military seamanship training barge has now been restored and the top deck, with views over the Torridge Estuary, is adorned with colourful flags and bunting. Amongst the host of maritime memorabilia I was delighted to see an old lifebuoy from the ship“Severn Sands”. We photographed this massive dredger when it made its first appearance at Fremington Quay in 2007, when it broke it's moorings in 2009 and again when it was eventually dismantled at Yelland in 2010. So for me the lifebouy picture really is an end note for the old ship's "Circle of Life". Article Pat Adams 11April 2012

Rizzle Kicks represent a new breed of UK artists, self-created with unruly imaginations, the bands care-free lyrics and fun loving attitude has propelled them to the forefront of the UK music scene picking up a wealth of fans and support from fellow artists along the way. ‘Traveller’s Chant’ is a laid-back melodic track full of contemplative anecdotes; it perfectly reflects the humbling journey of coming of age. BIG GARDEN BIRDWATCH 2012 RESULTS

The Big Garden Birdwatch 2012 results are here! Wow! Just under 600,000 people took part, and helped count over nine million birds! In total, over 70 different species were recorded in 285,440 gardens across the UK over the weekend of 28 and 29 January. - Click here to view results in your area.
The 2012 Big Garden Birdwatch top 10; Position Species
  1. House Sparrow
  2. Starling
  3. Blue Tit
  4. Blackbird
  5. Chaffinch
  6. Woodpigeon
  7. Goldfinch
  8. Great Tit
  9. Robin
  10. Collared Dove
Starlings at all time low. Sadly, the counts revealed that starling numbers are at an all time low since the survey began more than thirty years ago.Though still at number two on the results board, starlings were seen in fewer than half the UK's gardens. In the first survey in 1979, the average number of starlings seen in UK gardens was 15. This year, that number fell to its lowest ever with an average of just three starlings seen per garden. These declines are being mirrored across much of northern Europe too, and because of this drop in numbers, the species is red listed as a bird of high conservation concern .........Click here to read article in full

Wildlife charity teams up with filmmakers for new course

Wildlife charity teams up with filmmakers for new course Devon Wildlife Trust is offering a unique opportunity to work alongside professional wildlife cameraman, Tim Shepherd. The course in wildlife film making is set to take place at the Trust's beautiful Marsland nature reserve in north Devon. The one day course is aimed at beginners in wildlife filming and those who have their own video cameras and want to improve their techniques. The day will be spent in the scenic meadows of Marsland working in small groups. The groups will encounter Britain's largest butterfly, the silver washed fritillary; moths drawn from the surrounding oak woodland and a rich diversity of other wildlife which inhabits the reserve. The day will be led by cameraman Tim Shepherd, a wildlife filmmaker best known for his work on BBC's Life and Frozen Planet programmes. Tim said: "I hope I can inspire other naturalists to have a go at filmmaking. It's a great way to tell a story or get a message across. Modern digital technology and the internet allow anyone to make and show high quality films. Even just a one-day course like this can get you going in the right direction.' Gary Pilkington, DWT's Senior Nature Reserves Officer who looks after Marsland said: "I can't think of a better place than Marsland nature reserve for budding wildlife film makers to make a start and with expert guidance from Tim it should be a brilliant experience." The course will be held on Saturday 14 July from 10am until 5pm with lunch provided. The day's course will cost £99 per person. Filmmakers are encouraged to bring their own camera and a tripod although a limited amount of equipment is available for use, including a variety of lenses suitable for DSLR cameras. The course is organised by Bristol Wildlife Filmmakers for Devon Wildlife Trust. For more information contact: http://www.bristolwildfilm.co.uk or call Devon Wildlife Trust on 01392 279244.

Gospel Chords from Florence and the Machine. Never Let Me Go release date April 2

Florence + the Machine are set to release ‘Never Let Me Go’ as the follow up to ‘No Light, No Light’ on April 2. This emotionally charged huge song is suffused with an elegantly weary grandiloquence, gospel chords shine the way for a multi-tracked flock of Florences to soar in free flight. “The gospel thing comes from my obsession with hymns. I’m drawn to anything that has a hymnal quality, be it Spiritualized or dusty old albums by Georgian choirs.” In the two months since the release of ‘Ceremonials’, love for Florence’s second album continues apace, a mainstay of the UK and US chart top10s with worldwide sales now in excess of 1.5 million. Fresh from a non-stop globe-spanning jaunt of live shows (the US, Brazil and a first visit to Japan), Florence has just returned to the UK where she performed at the Brit Awards & The NME Awards before embarking on her biggest UK tour to date in March. All 120,000 tickets for the spring tour were snapped up by her ever expanding army of fans up and down the country.

Wildlife Festival marks a golden year for charity

Devon Wildlife Trust is making the final plans for its Wildlife Festival which takes place in April. One of the county's premier green events the festival is being staged in the centre of Exeter and forms the focus of the charity's 50th anniversary celebrations. The Wildlife Festival is a free event to be held on Saturday 28 April between 10am and 4pm on Cathedral Green. This year the charity has attracted a record number of exhibitors including Pennywell Farm, Exmoor Zoo, Devon Bee Keepers Society, RAMM, South West Lakes Trust and Wild Aid. The event is being sponsored by South West Water and Tozers who will both be there on the day. This year the event will be a chance for the charity to showcase its work in the city through the Exeter Wild City project along with a time for people to get involve in the charity's 50th celebrations. It all starts with a colourful parade with giant bugs, fish and animals through the city centre followed by the official opening on the Green. Throughout day there will be opportunities for visitors to make their own nest box, meet birds of prey, pet small animals and spy on some creepy crawlies! Jo Pullin DWT's event organiser said: "This is a special Wildlife Festival to mark our 50th anniversary and it is set to be bigger and better than ever. There will be so much for families to get involved with and in previous years many have stayed all day. Face painting, puppet making, badge making and quizzes, the chance to try out the latest binoculars and scopes and even see a caveman! If you love wildlife and programmes such as the BBC's Springwatch then this is the event for you!" For more information about the event visit www.devonwildlifetrust.org. Anyone wanting to volunteer on the day please contact Jo Pullin on 01392 279244.

    Spring Breaks at Hartland Abbey

At Last, the sky above is blue! Spring breaks, the mists have cleared, the sun is out  just in time for Daffodil Day at Hartland Abbey. We arrived about 11.15am, no parked cars at the front as yet, blue sky and perfect light on the house so a great photo opportunity. Spotted a robin, a wren and two rather shabby painted ladies (the butterfly variety) as we made our way down the lush meadow. It’s so much warmer in this sheltered valley and the wildflowers are coming out sooner here than Peppercombe, my local patch just up the coast, the first Primroses, Bluebells, Dog Violet and even a Ransom and Greater Stitchwart are already in flower. Mission accomplished we pick up a Bacon Bap from the Exmoor Kitchens stall then have our picnic in the sun by the Summer House. On cold days you can sit inside and read all about the restoration of the Summer House and the Gazaebo by the log fire. A note on the table asks that visitors please “keep the fires going”. From here I noticed a new “High Road” a trail which runs all the way to the Gazaebo. Photographers and happy snappers will love this route when the woodland glades are covered in Bluebells in the next few weeks. Today we took the “Low Road” to Blackpool and felt a slight chill from the incoming tide after quite a balmy walk down, the sea, the deepest blue against the ochre hues of the cliffs. Dry under foot today as we ambled back up the meadow by the river. One of my favourite early Spring wild flowers is the Lesser Celandine. The star-shaped yellow flower twinkles in the sun lighting up coastal meadows, path and road-side verges. We took time for tea and Lemon Curd Cake back at the Abbey kitchens before taking some final shots as the daffodils turned their heads to the late afternoon sun. Their happy smiling faces reflected the convivial atmosphere created by Lord and Lady Stucely and their team making Mothering Sunday a real family occasion. Article Pat Adams 18/3/2012

Working Wetlands project provides advice pack for local landowners

Working Wetlands project provides advice pack for local landowners The Working Wetlands project led by Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) has this month produced a Practical Advice Pack to help support farmers in northern Devon who manage wildlife rich habitats. The pack has been designed so it is easy to keep and refer to and use out in the field. It will also be available to download from the charity's website. The pack contains 10 advice sheets which cover a range of topics from how to manage scrub and soft rush, to wet grassland restoration and swaling. Each advice sheet is illustrated and draws on the experience of the local farming community combined with the knowledge and skills of DWT's Working Wetlands project team. Mark Elliott, Working Wetlands Project Manager said: "We hope this pack will prove a very useful source of practical advice for farmers wishing to manage their grassland habitats, and protect their watercourses. Although we are currently working with over 300 individual farmers, we recognise that we can't reach everyone - and we hope this series of factsheets will help answer some of the more common queries. That said, we are still at the end of the phone and have a team of farm and wildlife advisors able to provide face to face advice.' Anyone interested in receiving a pack should call Working Wetlands on 01409 221823 or email working.wetlands@devonwildlifetrust.org Working Wetlands has been supported by the South West Water, Tubney Charitable Trust, The Environment Agency, Devon County Council, Devon Waste Management, GrantScape and Natural England.

Charity asks local wildlife lovers to get on their bike for nature

Devon Wildlife Trust (DWT) has this month launched its latest fundraising challenge to help raise money for its work protecting wildlife in the county. The Heart of Dartmoor cycle challenge is a new route, similar to one being developed by cycling organisation Sustrans. The 50 mile circular route starts in Ivybridge and will follow minor roads and trackways around the southern heart of Dartmoor taking in stunning views along the way. The challenge is open to anyone over 16 with a reasonable level of fitness who is able to raise a minimum sponsorship of £50. The money raised will go to Devon Wildlife Trust which is this year celebrating its 50th anniversary. Devon Wildlife Trust's Dan Smith said: "After the success of last year's Coast to Coast ride we are hoping local people will want to take up this year's cycle challenge. As we are celebrating our 50th we have set the minimum sponsorship at £50 but we are hoping people will be able to raise more. The route is suitable for both road and mountain bikes so all Devon's keen cyclists have chance to take part." Graham Wilson one of the volunteers who is helping to run the event said: "I believe the most valuable assets for our lifestyles are to have a healthy environment with access to wild places. When I go out on my bike, I enjoy these wild places and frequently see wildlife so a cycle challenge to Dartmoor is a wonderful reason to have fun and experience wildlife all at the same time. " The event is being held on Sat 12 May and people wishing to cycle should register by contacting DWT on 01392 279244 or by visiting www.devonwildlifetrust.org

    Brigadoon or Northam Burrows

Clear sunny morning to start but as we travelled down the Atlantic Highway the sea mist was rolling in, swirling over the countryside like a wave. It has been like this for more than a week. Northam Burrows Country  Park and Westward Ho! were completely shrouded.  A learner rider chose possibly the worse day to try out his  motorbike on the Burrows road. As we walked towards Grey Sands Hill we could hear a helicopter hovering close to shore by the estuary but it was nowhere to be seen nor was Chivenor, the Biosphere or Appledore. We walked to the end of the Spit and a dead porpoise lay prone on the pebbles adding to the eerie scene. The lack of visibility did not deter the golfers who emerged silently from the mist as we made our way back down beside the Dunes and across the links where sheep and horses grazed. Creepily silent, only two gulls and what I think were a pair of busy skylarks. Back at a bustling Westward Ho!, the Carousel Amusements and Slipway Takeaway were open. We didn’t see the sea but heard it and the resident Bingo caller singing "two fat ducks, quackity, quack". The good news is Spring is on the way Hockings Ice Cream Vans are back and I’ve seen my first ladybird.  (Article P Adams 11 March 2012)

‘MARLEY’ TO BE RELEASED BY ISLAND RECORDS ON APRIL 16th 2012

The Third World’s first superstar and arguably the most recognizable human being on the planet, reggae giant BOB MARLEY is celebrated this year in a film by award-winning director Kevin MacDonald (‘One Day In September’, ‘State Of Play’, ‘The Last King Of Scotland’, ‘Touching The Void’ and ‘Life In A Day’). ‘MARLEY’, which received a rapturous reception at its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Feb 12th, will be released in the UK on 20th April ’12 through Universal Pictures and features stunning live performances, intimate interviews with friends and family, and rare documentary footage, which tells the definitive story of the superstar who rose from the ghetto to become one of the greats of popular music before dying tragically young at the height of his fame. BOB MARLEY was born February 6, 1945 in rural St. Ann’s Parish, Jamaica, leaving home at 14 to pursue a music career in Kingston. A naturally gifted musician and singer he recorded his first track in 1962. In ’72 finding himself stranded in London with his band the Wailers he signed to Chris Blackwell’s Island Records and went on to enjoy global success and to put reggae on the music map. Many of his songs – which highlighted both Jamaica’s poverty and the spirituality of its people – have since become universal anthems. MARLEY died of cancer on May 11, 1981, aged 36.Says Kevin MacDonald: " MARLEY the film is an intimate, human portrait of the legendary singer . But as with any film about an artist - the main purpose has got to be to send the listener back to the music with a renewed appreciation for its beauty and significance. That's why I am so happy that Island are releasing this special collection of songs from and inspired by the movie." Says Chris Blackwell: “Kevin MacDonald has made a wonderful film about Marley. I think it will touch the hearts of many. It tells Bob’s story properly for the first time and you get a real sense of the man and his incredible talent. His spiritual message is as relevant now as it ever was and his music still resonates around the world.” The soundtrack to ‘MARLEY’ will be released on Island Records on 16th April ’12. It will be released in two formats: 2CD and a 3LP. It includes, for the first time on record, the 1978 One Love Peace concert performance of ‘Jammin’ during which Marley joined the hands of bitter political rivals Michael Manley and Edward Seaga, a gesture which went some way towards restoring peace to a strife-torn Jamaica. The tracklisting of the soundtrack, which follows the chronology of the film, is as follows:

    • 3) Simmer Down

New Otter Spotters for Exmoor & North Devon

New Otter Spotters for Exmoor & North Devon On Saturday 26 February Devon Biodiversity Records Centre (DBRC) found the sun shining and a full turn out at their Otter Spotter training day on Exmoor. For many years 'Operation Otter' has been a county wide monitoring project which has been vital for tracking this elusive mammal's recovery. Volunteers are often keen to be involved but funding to provide training days is not always available. This year South West Water generously supported DBRC and funded a classroom session in the morning, followed by identification skills sessions on the riverbank during the afternoon. Ellie Knott & Caroline Jones from DBRC have both been involved with the project from its earliest days and conducted the day's training. They were both delighted that twenty-one potential 'otter spotters' could attend the day resulting in 19 new sites being assigned to volunteers, 16 or which are in the North Devon area. Caroline said ''we are really pleased to have trained up some new people in the North of the county, as it has been some time since we could offer this support in that area''. During 2011 the Environment Agency issued a positive report on the otter's comeback. As a top predator it can be used as a guide to how a river's eco-system is functioning. Devon now has otters in all of its major rivers and Devon Wildlife Trust's waterside headquarters in Exeter, is often visited by at least one adult. Ian Egerton, Devon Biodiversity Records Centre's Manager, said: "It is important that DBRC continue to run monitoring projects such as this. Hopefully funding will be found to run similar days in other parts of the county as the interest this event generated has left us with a waiting list of other potential volunteers''.

Charity helpdesk to accept call of the wild

A local wildlife charity is this week re-launching its Wildlife Helpdesk which aims to give advice to people with enquiries about a range of wildlife issues. The Devon Wildlife Trust has opened the doors of the Helpdesk which is being run from its offices in Commercial Road, Exeter, next to the charity's headquarters at Cricklepit Mill. Up until now the organisation has run an ad hoc advice service to respond to the hundreds of calls it receives each year. Now with a £10,000 Awards for All grant from the Big Lottery Fund, the organisation has revolutionised the facility to provide a better service to the public, including the creation of a drop in facility for people in the local area. Verity Hunt DWT's Administration Officer said: "We get many calls on a wide range of issues such as planning, wildlife gardening and species identification. It is clearly a very popular and important service we are running but it's been crying out for more funding and more volunteers to help. It's fantastic to now be up and running and to be able to take more calls and for people to be able to drop in to see us. The grant has helped us maintain, improve and expand the service so we can respond more efficiently to more people's requests for information and advice." The service is being run primarily with the help of local volunteers who are using their time and knowledge to help others in need. Alice Waterson, one of Helpdesk's longer-standing volunteers, says: 'Being involved in the new helpdesk has been really exciting. We now have some great facilities here and we will be able to provide a really useful information service to the public. It's very rewarding to be helping local wildlife and in helping local people to learn and understand more about the species and habitats we have here in Devon'. People who wish to use the service can call 01392 260884 email hdesk@devonwildlifetrust.org or pop in weekdays between the hours of 10am and 4pm. Bucks Mills Breaks and "The Braunds"

Melinda's Cottage, is a delightful cottage in the quiet village of Bucks Mills within a conservation area on the edge of beautiful Bideford Bay. Rumour has it that the cottages were built from the timbers of Spanish galleons fleeing the Armada. The Braunds, who lived in every cottage in the village, were thought to be descended from the Spanish survivors. However it is believed that this cottage was built in about 1830. The last Braund to live here was Melinda with her husband, who worked as a chauffeur, and her seven children. The cottage was originally thatched and it is now listed. It retains many original features including the very old range which was made by Bodley in Bideford. Today the cottage is owned by the Stevens who have stayed in many self-catering cottages and have tried to provide everything for a super holiday. It is available for holidays and short breaks all year round and is a good base for exploring Bideford, Barnstaple, Clovelly, Westward-Ho! and is also close to Hartland Quay. An honest 5 minutes walk from the cottage, the path leads you passed the old lime kilns to a pebbly, sandy beach with lovely rock pools and safe swimming. The North Devon Coast Path crosses the village, leading to Clovelly in one direction and through the woods to Peppercombe in the other. Local wildlife records centre launches training days

Local wildlife records centre launches training days Devon Biodiversity Records Centre is this month launching a new programme of training courses focused on two of the county's most important wildlife habitats. The two-day courses are ideal for conservation professionals and consultants, as well as people just wanting to improve their botanical skills. Morning sessions are based at Woodah Farm in the Teign Valley, and then site visits are to nearby County Wildlife Sites and Devon Wildlife Trust nature reserves which are all known for their rich biodiversity. There are two courses planned; a Woodland Plant ID course in May and a Grassland Plant ID course in July. Each course costs £160 + vat (early bird fee) and is conducted over two days. The courses will focus on providing trainees with a better understanding of the habitat's ecology, survey methods and the necessary plant identification skills. Topics also covered during the courses will be habitat management techniques and how to identify invasive species. Ian Egerton, Devon Biodiversity Records Centre's Manager, said: "We have considered running training courses for some time as our survey staff have a high level of botanical experience and expertise specific to Devon's habitats. We were also keen to ensure that local courses were available at high quality sites in the county, so that travel could be kept to a minimum for both the environment and people's budgets. It's important that conservation professionals can add to their Continual Personal Development and we can also help train the next generation of wildlife enthusiasts who may be environmental students or budding botanists". Otterly in love at Valentines - public show fondness for Adopt a Species scheme

Devon Wildlife Trust's (DWT) is offering its popular adopt a species scheme this month suggesting to supporters that it is a great alternative gift for Valentines Day. The adopt a species scheme, launched in 2009 through the DWT website, www.devonwildlifetrust.org and allows people to support the Trust's conservation work in Devon, protecting habitats and species for future generations to enjoy. People can choose to 'adopt' from a list of five lovable species: dormouse, otter, dolphin, bat and hedgehog. With each £20 donation, purchasers will receive a soft toy of their chosen species along with a welcome letter, fact sheet, certificate, a postcard of the species, a fun activity book, a pack of six colouring pencils and an update letter after six months. DWT's Phoebe Grubb said: 'This is a great way for people to support our work - adopt a species makes the perfect gift for nature loving adults at this time of the year! The packs come with great little cuddly animals and are a really nice way to show your love for someone special.' The money raised through the scheme goes towards the costs of carrying out conservation work throughout the county benefiting these species and the habitats that they need to thrive. To adopt a species today, visit www.devonwildlifetrust.org or call Devon Wildlife Trust on 01392 279244.

Hartland Abbey Highlights. Wild Flowers and Woodland Walks

While winter winds bite and the first snow flurries settle on the frozen ground I thought it would be a good time to look back on some of the highlights of 2011. The sun definitely shone on Hartland Abbey in July when it was visited by the BBC Antiques Roadshow. The programme was aired on the 8th of January and attracted over 6 million viewers. There are a host of other events at Hartland Abbey including the annual Spring Wildflower Walks. I went to my first Snowdrop Sunday in February 2008 now Snowdrop Sundays, Daffodil and Bluebell Days are firmly fixed on the North Devon Coast and Country Calendar. Hartland Abbey, the ancestral home of the Stucley Family, is located in a sheltered steep-sided valley flanked by a fast running stream and ancient woodland. From the majestic house a long meadow sweeps down to Blackpool Mill Cove and the sea. On Open Days the public are allowed to use the private footpath which meanders down to the beach between this tranquil meadow and the woods. This is a great walk for four-legged friends and all generations of the family. The not so nimble can stick to the footpath while the more agile can venture up through the woods via designated paths to explore the Summer House and the Gazebo beyond. The Gazebo is perched on the hillside high above the South West Coast Path and Blackpool Mill Cottage, location for BBC1's film adaptation of Jane Austen's "Sense and Sensibility". Blackpool Mill Cottage, became Barton Cottage and was, for a while, home to the Dashwoods. On Daffodil Sunday, a cold day in March we checked out the newly restored Summer House, and were delighted to find a log fire burning in this now inviting cosy hideaway. Although the big draw is the historic daffodils at this time of year there are also plenty of narcissus, primrose, dog violet and great swathes of pretty wood anemone. The ornamental cherry was flowering and huge buds were emerging on the old Rhododendron and Magnolia. On the way out we stopped to take shots of vibrant Spring Squill. April 25 and we are back for the Bluebell Walk. Spotted a Buzzard aloft, a little red Robin, small white, orange tip and speckled wood butterflies and heard a Peacock. Three donkeys loped down to see us off at the gate, black sheep were bleating on the upland while white sheep and lazy cattle snoozed on the meadow beside the Abbey River. The Summer House, now bathed in dappled light, is surrounded by fresh green woodland ferns and bluebells. The legendary bluebells, which stretch from the Walled Gardens to the sea, were magnificent carpeting the banks either side of the path, the blue haze continuing upwards through the woods. The Bluebells were accompanied by Red Campion, Ransom (Wild Garlic), Lesser Stitchwort, Speedwell and Dog Violet. Down at the beach a loud rolling surf was crashing on the rocks. Amazingly wild flowers thrive on this windswept coast. Thrift Sea Pinks and Kidney Vetch poke out from the crags and the cliff meadow is dotted with Sea Campion, Devils-bit Scabious, Daisies and Lesser Celandine. Blackpool Mill Cove sits between Hartland Quay and Hartland Point on the South West Coast Path and the coastal hills are covered in golden Gorse at this time of year. After the bracing walk back up the meadow, beside the Abbey River, it was time for a well-earned cup of tea. There was a selection of homemade cakes, cream teas and our pasties arrived piping hot from the Abbey Kitchen Aga. Happy Days!

    Charity's conservation kit cuts Culm

In December 2011, Devon Wildlife Trust introduced its Pasquali low ground pressure tractor to landowners in North Devon, as the charity's machinery ring moves into gear. The tractor was purchased last year as part of DWT's Working Wetlands Project to help with conservation work on environmentally sensitive sites in the north of the county. The tractor is already being put to good use: this month alone will see it working in the Knowstone, Witheridge and Templeton areas. The specialist piece of kit is designed to handle rough wet ground, and is set up with a flail mower to tackle rush and scrub that commonly invades areas of the Culm grassland that the charity is working to protect. Marie Butterfield DWT's Working Wetlands Advisor said: " This new work follows on from County Wildlife Site surveys earlier in the year where we identified areas of high wildlife value which require improvements in management to make sure they are in the best condition for the rare species. Our plan is to bring in the Pasquali tractor to these sites enabling us to clear scrub and gorse which have invaded their wildlife-rich grassland. The tractor will clear the way to allow long term management using ponies or cattle." The equipment adds an extra element to the already burgeoning range of kit that the charity already lends to local farmers and land managers. This machinery ring includes cattle handling units, a soil aerator, topper and trailer. All are useful tools in efforts to better enable local landowners to manage their rare grasslands as easily and cheaply as possible. For more information about the Pasquali tractor and how to make use of the resource, call the Working Wetlands team on 01409 221823 or email sberry@devonwildlifetrust.org
Working Wetlands has been supported by the South West Water, Tubney Charitable Trust, The Environment Agency, Devon County Council, Devon Waste Management, GrantScape and Natural England.
